The Cambodian minister of education, youth, and sports said that 6 high school students have been selected as participants to the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) held in Indonesia, and they all received awards in their tests.
The minister said that 6 Cambodian students were sent to the competition among 196 other students coming from 36 different countries. One of the Cambodian student received the gold medal, 2 received the silver medals, and 3 received the bronze medals.
The gold medal recipient is Dy Kuchsa, the silver medal recipients are Mom Chariya and To Sovisal, and the bronze medal recipients are Say Buntha, Hun Vanasalo, and Huoy Channaren.
Kol Pheng, the minister of education, youth and sports, said that his ministry and the prime minister had provided encouragement [prizes] to all the successful students who brought honor to the country.
Kol Pheng said: “Normally, when a student receives a medal, we provide them with a prize. The number 1 recipient would receive 1 million riels ($250), then 500,000 riels ($125) etc… However, recently, with the international award, I requested a change from the prime minister. Prime minister Hun Sen allowed the ministry to increase the prize to over 3 million riels, such as 3.5 million riels ($875) for the number 1 recipient, and also an increase for all other award recipients as well. We will distinguish the local award prize and the international award prize. This is an encouragement for good students.”
Kol Pheng also indicated that his ministry will send other students to participate in math contests in Brazil in the near future.
