A San Francisco-area man arrested in Cambodia on charges of having sex with underage girls returned to the United States on Wednesday to face criminal charges, U.S. officials said.

The case is the first since the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled earlier this year that the U.S. government can prosecute its citizens who travel abroad and pay for sex with children.

Cambodian police arrested Michael Koklich, also known as Michael Light, in February and charged him with illicit sexual conduct with two girls aged 11 and 13 for $10 to $20.

Now back in the United States, he faces two criminal charges that could bring a maximum sentence of 30 years, Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement.
