Yesterday, Funcinpec sent to the National Assembly its choices for the formation of parliamentary committees – which had to be modified in order to allow the SRP to participate in. Heng Samrin, the new president of the National Assembly since the resignation of Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the president of Funcinpec, said that this political party (Funcinpec) had accepted to part with the leadership of the committee for the national defense, interior, and fight against corruption – which up to now was presided by Monh Sopha – as well as the committee for foreign affairs and international cooperation, held under the presidency of Princess Norodom Vacheara. According to Leng Peng Long, the secretary-general of the National Assembly, the permanent committee of the Assembly would include this issue on the schedule of the members of parliament debate session.

Without elaborating on the proposal advanced by his party (the Funcinpec), Monh Sophan believes that the number of committees of the National Assembly – currently numbering 9, 5 of which are presided by the CPP, and 4 by the Funcinpec – should be increased. He explained: “each of the committee involves 5 or 6 ministry departments. It is too much and this harms the efficiency of the work.” Another modification to be adopted in the organization of the National Assembly is the creation of 2 positions of deputy secretary-general, bringing to 3 the number of deputies to Leng Peng Long (CPP) who was newly named to this position to replaced Kim San (Funcinpec). The SRP indicated that Son Chhay, the leader of the SRP parliamentarians, should obtain the position of third deputy.

Furthermore, at the political level, the CPP and the Funcinpec should meet each other next week to assess their cooperation. Meanwhile, since the resignation of Prince Ranariddh, several Funcinpec provincial governors were replaced by CPP party members. “The meeting is scheduled for 11 April to discuss our cooperation,” Khieu Kanharith, the minister of information and CPP spokesman, confirmed. The Funcinpec delegation will be led by Nhiek Bun Chhay, the new secretary-general of the party.

Since the recent replacement of Funcinpec governors, the news media did not stop speculating on who from the Funcinpec party would go next. In particular, the news media raised the issue of replacing Funcinpec ambassadors abroad. “Currently, there is no issue about that,” Khieu Kanharith commented.
