ASEAN students to rebuild school in Cambodia

dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur

Singapore - Students from Singapore are joining a 90-member South-East Asian youth contingent going in June to Cambodia to rebuild a school, participants said Wednesday.

'In Singapore, we are thoroughly spoilt,' said Republic Polytechnic student Daniel Phang.

The 20-year-old Phang said that he regards the expedition as a humbling experience.

Thirty-three members of the group are set to go from the city- state, with the rest from other countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Sponsoring the mission is the Singapore 2006 organizing committee. It is arranging a series of events leading up to the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in September.

Minister of State for Finance and Transport Lim Hwee Hua said that rebuilding the school will help reinforce the role of individuals in helping less developed countries.

ASEAN includes Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar (Burma).
