Phnom Penh - A teenaged Cambodian brother and sister died just minutes apart in two separate hit-and-run car accidents after the brother tried to help his critically injured sister, police said Monday.

Praep Pha, vice police chief of Public Order for Ang Snoul district, just outside the capital, said by telephone that Von Pouv, 18, and his sister Von Sray Touch, 15, were crossing a busy road at about 7 p.m. on Saturday when the girl lagged behind and was hit and killed by a speeding car.

'The brother went back to see if he could help his sister, but as he was picking up her body a few minutes later he was hit by a second speeding vehicle. Both children died almost instantly,' he said.

He said witnesses told police that neither car stopped and neither vehicle appeared to have number plates, although the drivers chose different escape routes and were almost certainly not together.

Cambodia does not have the technical capacity to enforce drunk driving laws and accidents increase astronomically during this period of the year when people drink heavily in the period before the mid-month Khmer New Year celebration, which is one of the biggest festivals of the year for the nation.

Police said they suspected both cars were being driven by drunken revellers.

'The children are survived by their parents and nine brothers and sisters. The funeral is today. It is a tragedy for the family and we are still seeking the drivers, but unfortunately it will be difficult to find them now,' Pha said.
