Cambodia's Apsara Authority receives environmental protection certification

Cambodia's Apsara Authority, in charge of Angkor temples preservation, received an environmental protection certification for its management plan, local media reported on Thursday.

Japan Quality Assurance Organization (JQA) director Ueda Matahiro personally handed the ISO 14001:2004 certificate to Apsara Authority director Bun Narith on April 18, according to The Cambodia Press Review. The certification represents three years of effort on the part of the Apsara Authority to develop and implement plans to protect the environment of Angkor Wat.

Auditors from JQA approved certification of the Apsara Authority after a detailed inspection in November 2005 on existing environmental plans including weather, water and waste and how the authority implemented those plans.

The authority has carefully trained all staff members in eight different departments and disseminated information to stakeholders in the area, Bun Narith said.

Bun Narith said that to efficiently manage Angkor Wat's environment, the Apsara Authority drafted strategies to educate people, from monks and students to business people and tourists, on how to participate in the environmental management process. Programs at the temples broadened their knowledge and allowed them to participate in the maintenance of Cambodia's national culture.

Several Japanese institutions provided donations to support the Apsara Authority in creating an ISO-compliant environmental management system. Bun Narith said that annual inspections by international organizations will be carried out to ensure the authority continues to comply with the standard.
