Lack of job and poverty pushed a young woman to commit suicide

Heng Chantha, an 18-year-old young woman was driven to commit suicide by jumping from the Chroy Changvar bridge. Lack of work in the countryside has pushed a large number of young adults to seek work in factories in the vicinity of Phnom Penh, the capital. Some were taken advantage of and found themselves working as prostitute. In the case of this young woman down on her luck, unable to find work, hungry and running out of money, faced with a bleak future, she had no choice but to attempt to kill herself. In spite of the rosy government statistics on the economy, poverty still looms large in Cambodia where social issues are ignored and neglected by the government of prime minister Hun Sen. Phnom Penh: A young woman attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the Chroy Changvar bridge at 1:40 PM on 02 April. However, her suicide attempt was aborted when fishermen saved her out of the water on time. Regarding the suicide attempt, no one seems to be able to learn the motive of her attempt as the young woman passed out. The police claimed that she may have some problem which caused her to try to kill herself. Finally, in the afternoon of the same day, the truth of her suicide attempt was revealed by a police officer: she has some emotional problem because she cannot find work and she does not have any money. This claim caused some surprise because this is the very first time that a needy woman is driven to take such drastic action unlike other past suicide attempts.

According to the police patrolling the Chroy Changvar bridge, before the incident, the young woman traveled on the bridge by bicycle from the west to the east. When she arrived at the bridge mid-span, she got off her bicycle and jumped into the river. The police indicated that when the woman jumped into the river, several travelers stopped their vehicles in traffic to look at the incident, this caused a traffic jam on the bridge. Immediately, fishermen near the bridge went on to rescue her and delivered her to the police. After her rescue, the young woman told the police that her name is Heng Chantha and she is 18-year-old. However, she lost conscience for a long moment after speaking out only a few words.

At the latest news, we have learned that the young woman told the police at the bridge that she did not want to live because she has no job, no money, and nothing to eat. Having no hope in life, she decided to commit suicide after leaving her rental place near Kirirom theater in Khan Chamkar Mon, when she arrived at the bridge, she decided to jump from it to commit suicide.
