VLADIVOSTOK. April 3 (Interfax) - Primorye coast guards have stopped two Cambodian fishing vessels for illegal fishing.
The Aquarius 1 schooner was caught fishing in Russia's internal waters illegally early on Monday, the Federal Security Service's Primorye department told Interfax. About 900 snow crabs were discovered on board the schooner. The crew had no permit to catch fish in the area and is being escorted to Nakhodka, the department said.
Another fishing vessel without a name or flag, was stopped on Saturday within the limits of Far East State Sea Preserve in the Peter the Great Bay off the Bolshoi Pelis Island. The crew did not respond to border guards' inquiries and tried to escape, dangerously maneuvering at a high speed.
The ship slowed down after coast guards fired warning shots.
An investigation revealed that the ship, named Daring, sailed under the flag of Cambodia and carried 4.5 tonnes of freshly caught crabs. The crew failed to produce any official permit to fish in the area.
Primorye border guards checked 272 ships in the first quarter of 2006. Twenty-four ships, including four foreign, were stopped. Fines totaling 1.7 million rubles were imposed on the crews. sd
