Cambodian rights group voices concern over tribunal jurists Cambodia

Australian Broadcasting Corporation

A Cambodian rights group has joined an international chorus of criticism against judges and prosecutors appointed to try Khmer Rouge leaders at an upcoming tribunal.

Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee says it has no confidence in some of those appointed from Cambodia's judiciary which is plagued by corruption, incompetence and political interference.

The country's top legal body this month approved a list of 17 Cambodian and 13 UN-appointed foreign judges and prosecutors for the joint UN-Cambodian tribunal which is set to open later this year.

The New York-based legal watchdog Open Society Justice Initiative and the Hong Kong-based Asian Human rights Commission have also criticised the selection of Cambodian judges and prosecutors.

The Cambodian rights group said although it lacks confidence in some of the appointees, progress was being made for preparations for the tribunal.
