The famous opposition leader and the president of a famous NGO in Cambodia, greeted each other for the first time in public, in front of a crowd of thousands, yesterday, following their recent disagreements. The mutual traditional greeting, and the cordial and warm handshaking during the May Day celebration at the commemorative location for Chea Vichea, the slain popular union leader, showed the public that the two democrats no longer have issue with each other, as was exaggerated a few days earlier.
Sam Rainsy, the opposition leader, and Kem Sokha, CCHR president, had displayed [amicable] gestures towards each other for the first time yesterday. This made SRP supporters and those who like to listen to Kem Sokha’s speech in public forums, feel very happy because the public sees that one (Sam Rainsy) is capable of redressing the country’s situation on time following the next legislative election, and the other (Kem Sokha), the head of a NGO, has the ability and the determination to educate people so they know democracy, their rights, and their role, especially the value of each of their vote which is worth more than 10 kilos of rice, one sarong, and 300 grams of MSG [they receive in bribe for voting for a rich political party].
The clash between the two famous people in the past, made some SRP supporters not too happy, and those who like to listen to Kem Sokha’s speech became desperate because they don’t understand why the two democrats cannot talk to each other.
However, the gesture of the two personalities yesterday took away the doubt from everyone. Kem Sokha praised Sam Rainsy in front of thousands of workers and reporters. He said that Sam Rainsy helped the garment workers for many years already. Kem Sokha said: “I know that H.E. Sam Rainsy resolved with the government for us (workers) so that we can meet in victory today.”
After paying respect to Chea Vichea, Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha walked together with the crowd from the location where Chea Vichea was assassinated (Wat Lanka) towards the monument of independence. There, the two personalities gave a speech one after another, criticizing the government for allowing the police to prevent the workers from marching on May Day.
