Several hundred of families which were moved by the Phnom Penh municipality from Sambok Chab village, Phnom Penh city, to a new location in the suburb, currently need urgent help. Rik Chor is filing his report below.

Worries of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights

On this issue, the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) had demanded anew to the Phnom Penh municipality to urgently resolve the problems these villagers are facing with.

CCHR had issued a new declaration this Friday following the forced removal of several hundred of families to be relocated in Kauk Roka district, Dangkao suburb of Phnom Penh on 06 June 2006. The authority acted in order to take the land of Sambok Chab village to give to the private company Sour Srun to develop.

CCHR which is presided by Mr. Kem Sokha, stressed that the Cambodian authority had dismantled the villagers’ houses, and led them to lose the opportunity to receive necessity staples and social services, i.e. numerous families had lost the opportunity to earn daily income in order for them to support their families.

CCHR also said that in particular, the current living condition of the villagers in their new location is such that they are facing very serious threats on their life and health, i.e. the villagers can easily contract various diseases because of their use of unsanitary waters for cooking, bathing, and the lack of sanitary conditions.

CCHR is demanding that the municipality of Phnom Penh to fulfill its responsibility for the villagers basic needs in order to defend and insure their livelihood and the residential rights of the people such as the right to receive clean water, sufficient food, decent housing, healthcare, and school facilities for the children of these people.

To: Sambok Chap Villagers with love

I am sorry to say that our beloved Cambodian King Sihamoni is not home today and off to Thailand to party. King Sihamoni is in Thailand to represent Cambodia the poorest country in the world and many many more poor Cambodian Community like Sambok Chap community. Sambok Chap Villagers should have the comfort that thing will get worse even if our King Sihamoni came back from Thailand.

God bless Sambok Chap Villagers.
