Sam Rainsy Party lawmaker Yim Sovann, who chairs the National Assembly's Commission on Home Affairs, National Defense, Investigation and Anti-Corruption, has written to Prime Minister Hun Sen requesting that five ministers face questioning by the Assembly over the World Bank funding corruption scandal. Finance Minister Keat Chhon on Thursday announced that the government will promptly repay $7.6 million to the World Bank following the discovery of systemic corruption in three multi-million-dollar Bank-funded projects. Questioning the ministers of finance, rural development, land management, public works and industry was imperative to prevent such a scandal happening again with foreign aid, Yim Sovann wrote in the letter dated Thursday. "Premier, allow the five ministers to answer questions verbally at the Assembly's plenary session in the near future," he wrote. Minister of Rural Development Lu Laysreng said he would welcome the opportunity to speak and accused his predecessor of implementing the troubled World Bank-funded project.
