PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Former Khmer Rouge military commander Ta Mok died Friday as he awaited trial on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, his lawyer said.

The notoriously brutal commander had been in government detention since his capture in 1999. He was transferred from prison to a military hospital last month suffering from high blood pressure, tuberculosis and respiratory complications. He had been in and out of a coma since last week.

Ta Mok was believed to be 80.

His lawyer, Benson Samay, said that he died at 4:45 a.m. Friday.

Ta Mok, whose real name is Ung Choeun, was one of two senior Khmer Rouge officials awaiting trial.

The group's rule in the late 1970s led to the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million people through starvation, overwork, disease and execution.

his spirits rest unaccuse and the khmer hearts broken with sadness and injustice. How can we ever find the truth why the KR did what they did if these leaders keep on dying. For all we know there is a conspiracy to kill everyone of them. That's what i believe. I am angry at his death for so many different reasons.

It seems BENSON SAMAY doesn't need to work hard to collect his money from TA MOK!ahahahahah

How often do a lawyer get this kind of case where the client died before have a chance in court? It is one in a million!

I know deep in my heart that TA MOK want to tell the truth before he die but AH HUN SEN government refused to hear him or even give him a chance! This is an honest man and I wish I know more about him!

I feel the same with the two above.

I had posted my comment earlier regarding Ta Mok and his legal implication with the Military prison and the trial.

1)Military prison . . Interrogation . . confession . .

2)Does it sounds like COERCION?

3)Was Ta Mok under DURESS FOR CONFESSION?

4)Was Ta Mok well presented by His counselor or was his counselor one of them?

5)Why all of sudden, Ta Mok got severely ill?

6)What kind of punishment did Ta Mok received to have confessed ALL THOSE 50% evidence?

Law/legal rules and procedures - The information Ta Mok had told them is too prejudicial and should NOT be admitted AS EVIDENCE IN COURT.

So, if Ta Mok was the only defendant in the case then the court would render decision as "technical errors" - case close.

But there are more high profile KR leaders that eventually will be brought to face trial. However, with Ta Mok has recently set precedent in the case WHO DARE WOULD TALK ABOUT WHAT REALLY HAPPENED DURING 1975-1979.

WITHOUT PROPER WITNESS PROTECTION PROGRAM - KHIEU SAMPHON, NOUN CHEA, ETC. THEY WOULD NOT DARE TO TALK.

"THEY WHO INTO THEMSELVES WILL PERISH IN HELL".

KHMER YOEUNG TROV KROAK LOEUNG!

CAN'T PLACE OUR HOPE ON THOSE MOTHER FUCKER - THEY HAVE DESTROYED AND CONTINUE TO DESTROY EVERYTHING THAT ARE BELONG TO KHMER!

This animal should have died since he was a baby so that Cambodia can spare their citizen of three millions of lives. This man has shamed his nation and his families for many generations to come. His name will be remembered as a most worst evils to terrorise people in the 21 century.

he should have died in brutal ways like he did for the peroid 1975 - 79. moreover, he should pay back the lives of several milions cambodian who died from starvation, torture, heavy labor, shooting, beating with hoe heads, bamboo stick, etc. I bet, he is going to hell shortly. Everybody must know life cycle. in other word, cart wheel rolling sometime on the land sometime in water or mud, meaning that sometime lucky sometime bad luck.

what a silly way to try the killer like that ha,ha,ha,!!!!!!!, prosecution of ghost what a good idea!!!!!!!! look they wait until all the killers die. maybe if i were the government, i would do something to prove Cambodian survivors, specially young generation that they deserve to get what they did during their rules. he died with milions of curses from Cambodian suffering during their rules.
