Former U.S. Embassy official guilty of visa fraud

A former U.S. Embassy official in Phnom Penh has pleaded guilty to visa fraud, local media reported on Thursday.

Former regional security officer Harold Countryman and his wife Kimberly aided and abetted visa fraud after falsifying information to obtain a visa for a Cambodian woman who they then brought to the U.S. to work for them as domestic servant for two years, The Cambodia Daily quoted U.S. Embassy's statement as saying.

Kimberly Countryman admitted to using the fraudulent visa to force the Cambodian woman to work in their employ.

She also admitted to withholding portions of the Cambodian woman 's pay, taking possession of her passport and physically assaulting her.

The two have been ordered to pay 100,000 U.S. dollars as part of their plea agreement and are scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 13.

"This case is a clear example that every government has corrupt employees, and the U.S. government is no exception," U.S. Ambassador Joseph Mussomeli said in the statement.
