HA NOI — The construction of an over VND16 trillion (US$1 billion) highway connecting Ha Noi with the northern border province of Lao Cai is scheduled to start next June, says the Ministry of Transport.
The 264km long highway is part of an economic corridor linking the southern Chinese city of Kunming and the port city of Hai Phong in north-eastern Viet Nam. The Ha Noi-Lao Cai highway will start from ring road II of the Thang Long-Noi Bai road to connect with the Ha Noi-Ha Long highway.
The Vietnamese and Chinese governments hope that the economic corridor will create favourable conditions for these localities to expand their import-export markets, reduce intermediate costs and improve the competitiveness of their commodities and services.
Ministry of Transport’s Transport Engineering Design Inc. (TEDI) has outlined two plans to build the highway.
The first plan outlines the construction of the highway from Noi Bai in Ha Noi to Yen Bai Province. According to the design, the highway will be a 34.5m-wide artery for vehicles to run at an average of 80-100km per hour. The majority of the six-lane road will run along the Hong (Red) River bank and hillside.
The plan for the second phase of construction involves extending the road with a 33m-wide section from Yen Bai to Lao Cai. The six-lane highway will narrow into a 24m-wide road surface with four lanes.
The new highway will go through Ha Noi, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho and Yen Bai before ending in Bat Xat District of Lao Cai Province and linking with Kunming-Heikhou highway in southern China.
According to the plans for the highway, the design includes lighting, cross-roads and bus stops, as well as telephone boxes every three km.
If construction proceeds as planned, the project will be completed in 2010. The Ministry of Transport intends for the completed highway to spur trade activities and tourism between Viet Nam and China.
The 443km corridor, running from Kunming City of Yunnan Province through Viet Nam’s Lao Cai Province, Ha Noi and Hai Phong to Quang Ninh Province, is one of three economic projects established under an agreement between the Vietnamese and Chinese governments.
