Ten of the 150 families facing forced eviction from the area known as Group 78 in Phnom Penh's Tonle Bassac commune left their homes Friday morning after accepting deals from the municipality, residents said. The 10 families were given $500 and 5-by-12-meter plots in Trapeang Krasang commune. "The majority of Group 78 families have vowed to fight their removal, their lawyer, Nuon Sokchea, who works for the NGO Public Interest Legal Aid Project (PILAP), said Friday. "This might be an effort to break up [Group 78]," Nuon Sokchea said, of the volunteer removals. PILAP claims most of the families have lived on the site since 1983 and have strong legal claims. Prak Yeng, 67, who agreed to leave, said villagers had accused her of being a City Hall spy. "I don't want to complain." she said "Let’s see what they will get for complaining." Fellow villager Hout Sovorn, 40, said she and other families will not volunteer to leave. The remaining Group 78 families are seeking $700 per square meter for their land. Municipal Deputy Governor Pa Socheatvong declined to comment.
