Phnom Penh - Flooding has cut off Cambodia's only deepwatersea port, preventing goods from reaching the local market and effectively halting the country's exports via sea, Prime Minister Hun Sen said Wednesday. Speaking while visiting flood victims in southern Kampot province, which borders Sihanoukville municipality where the port is located, Hun Sen urged the nation's Commerce Ministry to come up with analternative quickly and suggested urgent sea freight may be redirected through Vietnam.
"Yesterday, 200 containers could not pass between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville and returned to the capital," he said. Rainy season flooding also cut the port off last year for somedays, but district officials say this year's rains are worse and it was unclear how long the only road to the port from the capital would remain cut. Flooding has been widespread across Cambodia in recent days and at least one person has drowned. Prime Minister Hun Sen also urged authorities to do what they could to assist and rescue flood victims in a speech broadcast on national radio.
