Hun Sen's poverty-stricken Cambodia is willing to share its oil resources with both its richer neighbors: Thailand and now Vietnam

Vietnam, Cambodia to share oil resources

Phnom Penh (dpa) - Cambodia and Vietnam announced Monday that they would cooperate to study and explore Cambodia's potentially rich, recently discovered offshore oil reserves despite sea borders not yet finalised between the two neighbours.

The announcement followed hard on the heels of a visit by Thai caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on August 10. At that time, Thailand and Cambodia agreed on percentage divisions of shared oil revenues in disputed waters but failed to agree on the sea borders at the centre of the dispute between those two nations. They said that aspect of the issue might take six more months to resolve.

Vietnamese Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung met with Cambodian officials, including Foreign Minister Hor Namhong, for about two hours Monday soon after his arrival in Cambodia, on an official visit scheduled to end Wednesday.

"[Investigating] oil and gas reserves for the purpose of business between the two nations does not need to wait until the two have an agreement over sea borders," Cambodian Foreign Ministry spokesman Long Visalo told reporters outside the meeting.

He said Vietnam had considerable experience in the field and for that reason "the two countries should cooperate in this field."

"The two governments have decided to do this job together, and the two national oil authorities will work together," he said.

Vietnam is an established oil producer, ranking third in oil production among the 10-nation Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) behind Indonesia and Malaysia. Most of its production comes from offshore basement reservoirs, similar to Cambodia's richest known reservoirs.

Cambodian officials said they hope drilling would begin in the first of a number of potentially rich offshore oil and gas fields by 2008. The venture has already attracted companies that include the US oil giant Chevron.

Analysts have speculated that Monday's announcement might serve as a warning to Thailand not to lag in coming to an agreement with Cambodia over its sea borders.

Cambodia has no formal agreement on sea borders with either of its powerful neighbours.

Nguyen Sinh Hung also discussed a range of areas in which the two nations should heighten cooperation, including energy, mines, industry and tourism.

Cambodia's ruling Cambodian People's Party and the Vietnamese government share strong historical links since Vietnamese-backed troops ousted the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979.

CPP and Vietnam also shared the responsibilty of raping Cambodia of its natural resources and making the rulers of these country wealthy.

They will continue to do so, until Cambodia become one country. Guess what that country will be?

this is sicken me.
first viet gets to control telephone and telecommunication of cambodia and now its oil. Shell and Esso are not good enough anymore. why don't hun sen regime just sign the country over and hand over to viet now. rediculious. cambodia has to vote all viet puppets out now before they and cambodia over.

this is just the million and one things that show that vietnam is still controlling cambodia and that cambodia is not yet independent. hun sen regime is viet regime disguised as cambo.

while most countries try to cooperate and make deals with the us and other rich and advance western countries, cambodia continues to hand out mega infrastructure and national security projects to china and vietnam. heads up to all those smart guys at the parliment and the national assembly for making such great national policies and decisions. Cambodia future will surely be safe and secure while they are there.

This is outrageous! Now Cambodia is facing natural disaster and Cambodian leaders are busy talking about forming political party and the Vietcong and the Thia are busy talking about sharing Cambodian natural resource for their own benefit! Stupid Cambodian leaders always fail to see their blind spot!

It seems to me that 2008 is a magic number for the Vietcong and the Thai! Why do AH HUN SEN government has to agree and give up everything on Cambodia from border issues to sharing natural resources with the Vietcong and the Thai before 2008?

AH HOR NAMHONG is talking with the Vietcong only for 2 hours and AH HUN SEN government willing to share Cambodian natural resource worth in the billion with the Vietcong? How about talking to Cambodian people! I wish AH HOR NAMHONG can talk for 2 hours with poor average Cambodian people and AH HUN SEN government can agree to reduce corruption 300 million dollars to 5 million dollars a year! This would help poor Cambodian people put to food on the table! AH HOR NAMHONG is only doing the Vietcong a favor by using his slave mentality!

Oh by the way! This agreement with the Vietcong is not a warning for the Thai because the fucken Thai had been taking Cambodian people land already including Cambodian sea! The fucken Thai had already made a agreement with AH HUN SEN to share more of Cambodian natural resource! Who need an enemy when Cambodian people have leaders like these! Execute all these mother fuckers!
