Heard of Pro Bono, Bar Association?

Tuesday, November 28, 2006

Letter to the Editor
The Cambodia Daily

If senior officials of the Cambodian Bar Association feel so deeply violated by the presence of foreign attorneys in the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, then I suggest that the members of the bar be spared the further offense of having foisted upon them some $4.8 million of foreign donations set aside for payment of defense counsel fees.

Inasmuch as the Cambodian Bar Association now wants to run the ECCC, I'm sure they would agree that the Cambodian government should pick up the tab. Or better yet, as the true occupiers of the moral high ground and obviously having nothing but the best interests of the tribunal defendants in their collective hearts, I’m sure they would be more than happy to represent their prospective clients on a pro bono basis. Let’s ask them and see.

Richard Angel,
Phnom Penh

Pro Bono: is used to designate legal or other professional work undertaken voluntarily and without payment, as a public service. (Source: Wikipedia.org)

Apparently, the Cambodian Bar Association thinks their law degree is above international law degree. The rest of the attorneys who holds law degrees from harvard, standford,Germanay, Finland, etc...are "2nd strings" to them...

Ego trip... Put these guys up in any supreme court in the world and these Cambodians lawyers will run back to be cyclo driver.

I agree that international law should override these "Cambodian lawyers". They can not even defend the average citizen against corrupt officials, what makes them think they are capable of interpreting international law.

I don't quite understand Ky Tech's logic. He wants to show the world that he is a smart and world-class Cambodian lawyer by making a fool of himself and the Cambodian Bar Association in the eyes of the international legal professions? I think it's more to do with a lot of money at stake, and he wants a nice big piece of the pie. Besides, other officials have already managed to carve up some nice pieces, including Om Yentieng, whose associated transport company was selected to ferry local and international tribunal staff between Phnom Penh and the tribunal location. One can already see a healthy profit in the three-year contract.

Cambodian lawyers can't work on a pro bono basis under the corrupt judicial system. Even the well-paid Cambodian doctors and nurses working in the world's renown Kuntha Bopha Hospital still don't understand the ethical conduct of their professions as the life saviours. Their arrogant and unhelpful attitude towards the child patients and their guardians are quite well-known resulting in needless fatalities and misery. The moral high ground is still too high for them to reach out.

It is hilarious how you racist two-faced losers continually bitch about yellow-skinned foreigners but enthusiastically bootlick white-skinned foreigners like the most desperate whores at the Walkabout.

Stay focus on the subject, and don't bitch about somewhere else. You sound just like Cambodian officials who don't usually respond to the relevant issue in a competent and intelligent manner.

Since, by definition racism is an unintelligent emotional response, the vast majority of the respondents in this blog (not to mention the commentators) are unintelligent and overly emotional.
