Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said Monday he had no plans to retire and until he decided to step aside, the only way to remove him was through the ballot box.
Speaking at an awards ceremony in the capital broadcast via state media, Hun Sen dismissed opposition criticism that he had been in power too long, saying there were two schools of thought on whether a new, inexperienced leader was preferable to a seasoned veteran such as himself.
"I will not retire yet. I will not retire until the Cambodian people do not vote for me any more," he said.
A comfortable and confident Hun Sen also took the opportunity to poke fun at his major political rivals, claiming they struggled to understand their own people because their roots lay overseas.
"How can you be a leader of Cambodia? You like to eat cheese. Cheese belongs in France," he said.
The majority of leaders of Cambodia's other main political parties are French speakers, including opposition leader Sam Rainsy and ousted former royalist Funcinpec Party leader Prince Norodom Ranariddh.
Hun Sen, 55, became co-prime minister after United Nations organized elections in 1993 and has held outright power via the ballot box since the 1998 national elections.
Political observers have said they expect Hun Sen to further strengthen his grip on power and his Cambodian People's Party to comfortably win the upcoming commune elections in April and the national elections set for 2008.
