Dana Rohrabacher, 9th term US Congressman from the State of California, sent a message to the Cambodian Prime Minister through Nguon Nhel, a high-ranking official from the National Assembly, asking him to retire from politics at the same time as he (Rep. Rorhabacher) does. The US Representative also asked Nguon Nhel, the [CPP] first Vice President of the National Assembly to help stop political killings in Cambodia.
The following is a short interview of Nguon Nhel with RFA’s Sam Borin.
Sam Borin (RFA): What did Mr. Dana Rohrabacher said about Cambodia?
Nguon Nhel (CPP): He talked about 2 points. The first point is that he met with Samdech Hun Sen. He said that in 6 years he will retire, he suggested that Samdech [Hun Sen] to retire like he will, can Hun Sen do it or not? Hun Sen should not cling to power, can Hun Sen do that or not? I told him that Samdech Hun Sen does not cling to power because the CPP congress stated that with the winning of the election by the CPP, Samdech Hun Sen is the candidate for prime minister, this is the story [the CPP] will publicize during the election campaign. If there are other candidates [to the position of prime minister from the CPP], they must ask the approval from the congress again for that to happen, either that or a referendum is needed. He [Dana Rohrabacher] said that it is purely a personal choice. I told him that it is related to the law, the election law and the parliament law.
He asked another question also. He asked about a rumor in which Cambodia and Vietnam are fighting each other 6 months ago. I told him that there is no fighting between Cambodia and Vietnam, after the Paris Peace Agreements, the 19 signatories of the agreements recognized the territorial integrity of Cambodia, but the discussion and the agreement on border issues are only a bilateral agreement matter. Therefore, in the installation of border markers, sometimes they are [encroaching] in our territories, sometimes they are in their territories, as specified in the “Brévié line” as the French had defined [KI-Media: Nguon Nhel is completely ignorant of the Brévié line which has nothing to do with land borders.]. Therefore, there are disappointments between the Cambodian people and the Vietnamese people, but as for the fighting, there is no such thing.
He also asked that before the election, there should be no political killings perpetrated on other party members, he also said that there are people’s houses which have been burnt down. I told him that these issues do not exist, however, during the election, one party can support another party, and sometimes, it is not the party but there are revenge, grudges which are settled with fighting, and killing. Some parties are taking political advantage by claiming that [the victims] are their activists, this is one issue. There are CPP members who died also, other party members died as well.
As for burning down people’s houses, it never happen, we serve the people and there is no reason to burn their house down. I told him that.
RFA: Did he accept your answers?
CPP: He did not say it was right, or anything else, he just smiled. At the end, H.E. Rohrabacher said that we understood each other, and he is also sending his wishes to Samdech Hun Sen. He said that we should tolerate each other next time, he said that.
