Mine, UXO casualties down to 440 in Cambodia in 2006

February 01, 2007

Cambodia saw 440 people killed or wounded by explosions of mines and unexploded ordinances (UXO) last year, down by some 50 percent over 2005, local media reported on Thursday.

Oddar Meanchey was the most seriously affected province with its casualty reaching 96 in 2006, up 4.3 percent over 2005, the Jian Hua Daily quoted government statistics as saying.

In December, the nationwide casualty was 22, among them 13 adult men, three adult women and six minors, it added.

Due to 30 years of armed conflicts, Cambodia has become one of the world's most heavily mined countries with an estimated 4 to 6 million of such "hidden killers" buried underground in areas as extensive as 2,900 square kilometers.

It may take the kingdom another 150 years to clear out all the mines and UXO, according to statistics.
