National lawmakers are asking Phnom Penh authorities not to fill in rivers, creeks and marshes surrounding the capital, which could invite increased flooding.
National Assembly lawmakers met Friday to discuss water maintenance in the country, where they aired their concerns.
Development in the capital has encouraged landfill in some of the outlying areas which can act as a floodplain during the rainy season. Small groups of residents complained recently the waterways they use for their livelihoods were being filled in by private companies.
"When there are floods, can authorities stationed there face them when the water overflows?" asked Funcinpec lawmaker Maonh Saphan says. "I am concerned."
Sam Rainsy Party legislator Son Chhay said the lakes around Phnom Penh had been filled in a lot already and that just a few rainfalls in the dry season would flood the city.
