Mao Hak, director of the department of water of the ministry of water resource and meteorology said on 26 July that the water level in the Mekong River is at its lowest when compared to previous years, during the same period of time. The depth of the Mekong River at the Tonle Bassac-Chaktokmouk station is 4.55-meter, this is about 2.27-meter lower than the average of several years. Water level in the Mekong River rises to more than 5-meter at the beginning of May and July, but now the water level has receded. The Mekong water level is at its lowest because of lack of rains in the water basin along the upper Mekong River in Laos, Thailand, and not because of hydroelectric dams in various countries. Even though there is a lot of rain in Cambodia, this does not impact much the Mekong River at all. Mao Hak added that based on survey of water level of the Mekong River at the Tonle Bassac-Chaktokmouk station, water level could rise up to 10.45-meter which is considered the alarming level for the city of Phnom Penh.
