Beijing counters the Dalai Lama with its own "Puppet" Lama

BEIJING: China’s controversial choice as the second highest Tibetan spiritual figure made a rare public appearance at the opening of the nation’s five-yearly Communist Party Congress.

The 17-year-old Panchen Lama is rarely seen in public, and China’s government-controlled press appeared to be taken aback by his presence as a “special guest” at Monday’s opening ceremony of the Congress.

“The sudden encounter with the 11th generation Panchen Lama, Gyaincain Norbu, caused a stir,” China News Service’s website reported on Tuesday.

Amid tight security, journalists were only able to take pictures from a distance of the bespectacled young man, who ranks second to the exiled Dalai Lama in Tibetan Buddhism’s religious hierarchy.

Asked if it was his first appearance at the Congress, the Communist Party’s biggest political event, the Panchen Lama stuck up two fingers, indicating it was his second, the China News Service said.

He attended the last Congress five years ago as an observer, according to the report, when he would have been aged 12.

His appearance here came ahead of the Dalai Lama’s scheduled meeting in Washington with US President George W Bush.

China, which accuses the Dalai Lama of trying to seek independence for his homeland, warned yesterday that the Bush meeting would seriously harm bilateral ties.

“Nothing he (the Dalai Lama) does or says corresponds with what a religious leader should do or say. He’s entirely a political figure,” Tibet Communist Party chief Zhang Qingli said at the Congress on Tuesday.

At the same time it allowed the Panchen Lama to appear at China’s biggest set-piece political occasion. The only time the Panchen Lama has appeared in front of an international audience before was at the World Buddhist Forum in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou in 2006, when he made clear his loyalties to China’s atheist rulers.

“Defending the nation and working for the people is a solemn commitment Buddhism has made to the nation and society,” he said at the forum.

“In this new era we need to shoulder the historical responsibility of defending the nation and working for the people.”

The 11th Panchen Lama was chosen by the Chinese government in 1995 as the reincarnation of the 10th, after Beijing rejected the Dalai Lama’s own choice.

The Dalai Lama’s choice, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, disappeared from public view in 1995 aged six and is believed to have been under a form of house arrest ever since.

Communist always use the same old tactics. China had learned from Cambodia communist yuon Tep Vong.

I don't see no tactic. The old fart (Dalai Lama) want to go into politic and the new monk just take over; that is all. It is not good to have vacuum in the religious group.

"Puppet" Lama of Chinese is ridiculous and stink!

Noope, there is no such thing as puppet religious figure in China, only pure religious figure.

The Chinese-appointed Dalai Lama has the same status as Tep Vong in Cambodia: a religious propaganda mouth-piece for the ruling party. They both don't have an in-depth knowledge of Buddhism, they only know communism ideology quite well. Even the Vatican has problems recognising the Chinese-appointed Bishop for the Catholic Church in China.

Still not convinced? Put either of them in front of the Buddhist scholars to answer their religious questions in a public arena that is not controlled by the government or the ruling party. I'm sure they would decline an invitation to such a public debate. It has been known around the world that they are just a religious pimp for the ruling party. This is a hard cold fact, unless you happen to be a frog living at the bottom of the well.

Wrong, China don't mixed with religion, and they don't want any politician to mix with religion either.

Just stop your big mouth. China is already in US's trap (addiction to oil) for export goods to US. Cheap and clean products go to America, polution dumping are on China land. SAR, Bird flu will be every where... Just wait 15 more years, which countries will engage for democracy war in Burma (oil). Mao will need to raise from hell to help his current communist regime that violated Mao's concept/vision of clean less developed country. Oil will be blocked everywhere, the most poluted city on earth will turn to dark without power to fuel its economy, riot just like in Burma will be in China. China will turn to Russia for help..... 7th Fleet military build up is evident. By taking China side, Cambodia will once again insane.... 40 years cycle's prophecy. Kissinger One will die, Kissing II will be reborn. Unlike Sihanouk said Nixon, it was Kissinger One who engineered & destroyed his power. This time, Kissinger II will do it to Hun Sen. I don't think Cuming (Ho Chi Ming) hwy to Singapor will ever be done to serve China 's interest. If it is done, it might be boomed by B-52 again.
