One of the two transients suspected of brutally raping and killing a Cambodian immigrant was found dead today in Santa Clara County jail of a suspected suicide, law enforcement sources said.
Luis Alvarado, 18, was accused of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and stabbing Sany San to death on July 22 near Story Road and Knox Avenue in East San Jose.
The other defendant, 30-year-old Julio Jovel is in jail awaiting trial.
Officers serving breakfast discovered Alvarado at 3:18 a.m. in his single-person cell, according to a county Department of Corrections news release. A bedsheet was tied around his neck and attached to the cell bars. He had last been checked about 30 minutes earlier, according to jail officials.
Officers and jail medical staff performed life-saving procedures and paramedics from the San Jose Fire Department were summoned. He was pronounced dead at 3:51 a.m., according to the release. Although the release did not identify the inmate by name, sources said that he was Alvarado.
The release said that a note was found in his cell, but corrections officials declined to reveal the content of the note at this time.
Both the Department of Corrections and the Santa Clara County Sherffi's Department are investigating. If confirmed as a suicide, today's incident would be the second in-custody suicide this year. In March Minh Phu Le, who was accused of killing his 2-year-old daughter by spiking her sippy cup with a date rape drug, killed himself in jail.
