VIENTIANE —The Finnish government plans to fund a total of 2 million euros (US$2.87 million) over four years to help develop a hydropower programme in the Mekong River Basin.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday between the Mekong River Commission (MRC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland at the MRC headquarters in Vientiane, Laos.
Of the total amount, some 1 million euros will be used to fund the MRC’s hydropower programme, and another 750,000 euros for the second phase of a capacity-building project and for a water management trust fund (250,000 euros).
The funding will be spread among the Mekong River countries, including Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, said Lars Backstrum, the Finnish ambassador to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.
Officer-in-charge of the MRC Secretariat, Do Manh Hung said the second phase of its capacity building programme will offer 40 professionals the opportunity to work, train and learn at the MRC over a period of four years.
This group will include young professionals from the hydrology sector in all four MRC countries and also lecturers from universities in the region.
