He survived "Killing Fields," now he wants to lead Cambodia

A Tacoma social worker wants to be elected prime minister of Cambodia.

Impossible? Don’t mention that word to Daran Kravanh.

Kravanh survived and escaped the Khmer Rouge slaughter in Cambodia that killed his mother, father, six brothers and a sister.

After living in Tacoma since 1991, he wants to lead his homeland, challenging the regime of Prime Minister Hun Sen.

I want to change the Cambodian society from bad to good,” Kravanh said.

His campaign had its first fundraiser Sunday in Tacoma at the Landmark Convention Center. Three young Cambodian women in colorful costumes honored him with traditional folk dances once reserved only for the Cambodian royal court.

About three dozen friends and supporters listened to his wife, Bree Kravanh, read from “Music Through the Dark,” her book about Kravanh’s account of surviving the Communist Killing Fields.

In between readings, Kravanh played the accordion, the instrument whose forbidden music he played to charm soldiers and somehow avoid death. And pausing often to rub his eyes, he talked of those terrible years when music was the only sanity amid the horror.

He recalled the words of a friend who was killed by the Khmer Rouge: “Play music. Music is powerful. Play until you die.”

Jarret McGill, who works with Kravanh at the state Department of Social and Health Services, was there to support his friend and contribute to his cause. “He’s probably the most giving person I’ve ever met,” he said. “He would be good for Cambodia.”

Chanday Nourn, a former Cambodian general and police officer who fled to America six years ago and now lives in Tacoma, said Kravanh has support locally, in Cambodia and elsewhere in the world.

Added Ted Savun, a former leader of the Cambodian association in Florida and now a community college instructor in Olympia: “Daran is the guy who likes human rights. He likes justice and freedom. He would go to Cambodia to free the country.”

Bringing change to his homeland means fighting poverty, adding jobs and promoting social justice, Kravahn said. And it means defeating Sen in the July 27 election.

Kravanh, 50, said he’s already an official candidate for prime minister, the country’s top elected position. He registered his own political party in Cambodia, the Khmer Anti-Poverty Party, with himself as its candidate.

On a visit to Cambodia last year, Kravanh said he gained the 6,000 registered supporters required to form the party. He spoke at a conference last April on the Khmer Rouge era. Leading Buddhist monks told him then, “‘I want you to be a leader of this country,’” Kravanh said.

He’s opened a campaign office in a house in Phnom Penh.

Kravanh said there are at least two other serious candidates competing against Sen.

Kravanh’s trying to raise money to go back to Cambodia in February to have a convention for organizing his supporters and campaign. He plans to return in March for a debate. And then, he plans to go back in June and stay through the election. If he wins, he’ll stay in Cambodia and leave his job as a social worker for the state.

Kravanh has been a leader in Tacoma’s Cambodian community and has helped organized Bon Om Tuk, a water festival that honors Cambodia’s boat racing tradition.

Speaking forcefully during an interview, Kravanh explained why he’s running for prime minister.

He witnessed people suffer during the Khmer Rouge regime before it fell in 1979. More than 2 million Cambodians were killed or died of starvation or illness during the reign of Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge tyrant.

But still, Cambodia suffers from poverty. The United Nations says Cambodia is the eighth least-developed country in the world.

“I saw the people suffer,” Kravanh said. “I cannot stay still.”

Bree Kravanh wrote “Music Through the Dark” before she and Daran married a year ago – when her name was Bree Lafreniere. She overcame her own doubts about her husband’s dream of becoming prime minister of his homeland.

“At first, I thought this was impossible,” said Bree Kravanh, 48.

Now, she said, “There’s no other good candidate that’s speaking to what people want and need desperately.”

After Sunday’s event, Kravanh said his supporters will have fundraisers in Oregon and California.

Kravanh concedes his candidacy appears be a longshot.

I’m not a politician,” Kravanh said. “I’m a peacemaker.”

“A lot of people laugh at me because I don’t have enough money,” he said.

“I have the capacity, I have the ability and I have the energy,” Kravanh said. “I will win.”

It's time to save our home land from vietnam without delay.I have no problem with hun sen but he has to send all vietcongs back to their land
without condition. After no more vietcongs in our country, prime minister hun sen should go for retirement and go for a good relax with his family.
Best wish for you Daran..our country need to change another leader.

Way to go buddy.Forget someone who may said ;" are you out of your mind ? ". Make sure you don't trash the Prime Minister on your first day of your campaign because that alone will land you in prey sar very quickly.

You are dreaming. You are trying to run your party with romote control. Mate, you are 50 years old and you just wake up? Stop manipulating Khmer, mate? This is a jok, a few months before election you think you win PM position? Go back to Pre-school, mate?

I admire you for changing the country from bad to good but don't hope that you will win a seat. Most of the political leaders from USA expected like that before they went to run elections but no one got even 1 seat.
You have a bility, energy and money so you would join SRP. You would have more chance to save our country if you join SRP but if not you will loss money, time and your work in USA.

You're solo Khmer-Kamikaze who will fly in a huge sky.....where you think is about well's size.
I respect your couragement & your heart but I think your head has no plan where to fly and hit the target .
Cambodia is not a pinic party place.

So glad to see you wanting to help the nation and people, though, challenging for Prime Minister would be too optimistic. You aim too high, American Cowboy!

You must be kidding. Do you have any idea how to run a political party in Cambodia? I might agree with others for your ability and potential of running a social club, but definitely not the political party, Cowboy.

Upon finished reading the article, I just cannot stop myself to offer my comment. Not trying to discount your gut, but you got to be realistic. My I suggest you keep that money to build schools for children.

Don't think like American! Don't say people want to change! (that is popular word in USA). Cambodian People heart a lot of promises made in previous elections but most of them did not really understand. They only vote for Hun Sen, Ranaridh or Sam Rainsy who they like and not because of promise they made.

If you want to lead this country, please study about previous elections and it will give you some ideas. It is not to discourage but just want you to better spend your time and money.

Stop thinking to save Cambodia. It's already RED Indochina. Cambodia is no longer exist. Cambodia is part of Indochina Federation.
Stop being stupididy Khmer people. The Cambodia was transformed into communist since King Sihanuk because he dreams to become the King of 3 countries. Now, he got it: Loa, Vietnam, Cambodia. This reason,he stisked with his master, YN. The person that he thanks millions time is HUN SEN because he is the one bring back his master.

Cambodia is no longer exist.

Its a beautiful story & I hope he has all his facts in place before entering the land of the tigers & crocs...

Is there a true Khmer person that want to drive Camb out of the foreign dictatorship and if there is how much energy or impact will this person on the people who don't care about the changes unless you have $$$$$$$$$$ to dishes out to the local governors that are so corrupted. Don't get me wrong sir, you are one brave person. I hope you'll get the US backing or otherwise I'll be afraid for your safety. You need more than bravery, you have to have agenda in places and must be strong mentally and emotinoally.

Remember, SRP could be another VN replacement...FYI.

Don't make me laugh, go back to where you came from pal !!!

You have a good heart to save Cambodia. But your dream is unreal. It is like dreaming of winning a lottery. Just look at the SRP, how much time and obstacles that it has gone through? And you just awake yesterday and want to be a Prime Minister? Come on... You live in an open world, but you think and talk like a frog in a well.

To all KHMER,

It's good if you want to save your Motherland but you should know how to priority the problems.

First your Motherland is control by xmer'youn. (You should get together with whom who is strong enough to compete with hun xen)

Two after all of you got your Motherland back on your own hand from youn.

Three it's time for you to pick who should run and in charge to make your Motherland go for GOOD.

If you don't think that way youn will never ever let you do to help your Motherland at all.

I believe this is simple enough for your people to think about and adopted.

Look how hard is your Khmer blood Kampuchea Krom go through??????????

Just make it simple to think. First is your Motherland, not a POWER HUNGRY than I'm your GOOD neighbor will be proud of your Khmer'people that can save and rebuild your Motherland.

WE are so proud of your Ancestor that can build Angkor Wat for all of you to see and THINK. Just think it simple. If they can do why not YOU KHMER now ??????????????

I knew you can do it but you got to be TOGETHER and remember that LOL?

Good luck and I pray for you.

Your GOOD neighbor.

I am glade to have Cambodian oversea want to bring change to Cambodia. We need a lot more of those.

But your deam to be prme minister and want to run the campaign for just a few months before election, that just not going to happen.
Look at Sam Rainsy, how long has he been struggling with Hun Sen? He risks his life every sigle time he went out side to meet poor people.

If even Sam Rainsy does not win the election, i think no one will win.

Just dont expect to much because you will be very disapornted.

My idea is that you better join the Sam Rainsy party and help it win election becase after all Sam Rainsy and you have the same goal-to defeat Hun Sen

Another though if Cambodian were to vote for your party, they will vote for Sam Rainsy insead.

Do not wish to give a negative thought to discourage you. But face the reality, be realistic and try not to grow wings to fly across a vast ocean into an unknown. It's too big of a dream to even waste a time thinking about it.

"To dream anything that you want to dream. That's the beauty of the human mind.
To do anything that you want to do. That is the strength of the human will.
To trust yourself to test your limits. That is the courage to succeed." ~ Benard Edmonds

Anybody who can think will know that this is a GIGANTIC leap. He is restless like many of us, but is one of the few courageous enough to take this extraordinary leap. However unrealistic it is. Is the love for the country and the people worth this GIGANTIC leap? Don't underestimate the power of a leader who inspire and bring out the best in people. AND don't underestimate the power of a leader who can give his people HOPE! You might be surprised. Good luck to you and your party Mr. Kravanh. May the power from the cries of the suffering and hopepless give you the strength to take on what will be one of the biggest but most worthwhile challenges in your life.

You have nothing to lose. Go to Cambodia and put a fight! Don't be discouraged by negative people! Go and try, test your limit. The least you will do is enlighten our poor people of their rights and to select a better leader for their future. Best of luck!
