UN Envoy Yash Ghai banned from Cambodia by the human rights-violating regime of Hun Sen?

Ministry Orders Visa Restriction for UN Envoy

By Sok Khemara, VOA Khmer
Original report from Phnom Penh
14 March 2008

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an order banning Cambodian embassies the authority to issue visas for UN human rights envoy Yash Ghai without prior approval.

Ghai has had an increasingly cantankerous relationship with the government, especially with Prime Minister Hun Sun, following his strident criticism of Cambodia's poor human rights record and the concentration of power in the hands of the premier.

The visa restriction comes days ahead of Ghai's expected rights report to the International Human Rights Council in Geneva.

"Any visa application to Mr. Yash Ghai has to be approved from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in advance, even if he's holding any kind of passport," the order says.

Christopher Peschoux, director of the Human Rights Office in Cambodia, said he would seek clarification on whether this policy was wider reaching or applicable only to Ghai.

Nice move!!!!next time don't forget it may come back to hunt your folks, PALs.

Although he later was granted visa to US but Hok Lundy for a good exmaple.

Cambodian Gov't can deny visa for Mr. Ghai at this time but not forever. (a man who say "NO" at the beginning but will be saying "YES" at the end).

Anyone want to bet, MR. Ghai will get visa to Cambodia no later than June 2008. (the grapewine source inside the Cambodian Foreign ministry)

It is sad that Hun sen has chosen this road to take Cambodia out from international communities. Yash Ghai was not a representative of Kenya. He is a convoy of UN that means Hun Sen is now playing with dangerous game.
Under 1991 peace treaty, all Cambodian fractions had signed in front of 18 other countries to have a UN office in Cambodia to monitor their human right development under each elected government and make their report to the UN. Mr Yash Ghai has done exactly as he is suppose to do. Theregore, Hun Sen needs someone to advice him carefully about his commitment to UN during the 1991 treaty.

We don't care who the dog is, but we don't what no dog here, period.

The UN should ban Hun Sen from attending the UN General Assembly/conferences by asking the US or any govt.concerned to not grant him any visa. By banning the UN envoy, Hun Sen has made Cambodia and himself an international pariah- the outcast of the international community. Hun Sen had probably violated international law as well because by international laws all diplomats (Ghai is a UN diplomat) hold diplomatic passports and have diplomatic immunity/prevelige to enter any country without restrictions. Hun Sen is playing a very dangerous game. He is pitting himself and Cambodia against the international community. America and the UN should ban him from attending any UN conferences, anywhere.

mr. ghai, can you go see thailand with their recent human rights/refugee rights abuse there with the Hmong ethnics group. i wish you would stop harrassing cambodia; we have come a long time and should be given credit for our freedom of expression and human rights since the end of the pol potist era. please stop being so gullible with some reports as you have not known the truth why squatters in phnom penh are being evicted because they are illegally staying on gov't properties all over areas of cambodia slated for development. please stop being so one-sided and report the truth. why? do you have problem with the current gov't of cambodia? what kind of constructive criticism did you give us before you ran you foul mouth!

I'll take that bet, 3:58. What's the price?

Hello Poster of 8:29AM,
You cannot compare Thailand and Cambodia. I agree that Thailand has their human abuses problem as well during the 70 and the 90 agansit their protest. But those responsible for those abuses have already left their country and their position. For their abuses toward Cambodian and the Mhong people were for their country immigration laws. They haven't killed half of their population as did by Cambodia in the 1975-1979 by Pol pot and from 1979-1988 by hun Sen. They haven't been arranged for peace by the UN. Cambodian have been abuses by the same animals since 1979 and have costed UN 2 billions for them to teach Cambodian animals to nake peace to each other. They have imposed to have a UN office for human right to monitor all electected government to make sure they will not committed any more crimes with human right abuses. Mr Yash Ghai has done his job superbly. Only those with animal mentality who do not see the job of Mr Yash Ghai as important to protect innocenses Cambodian from Animals like people abuses them. You moron (10:10), Hun Sen did not kill anyone. Unlike Pol Pot massacres people between 1975-1979, we were fighting Ah Khmer-Yuon insurgent thereafter who fight to keep Pol Pot in power because Pol Pot helped them to take their land back.

Hello idiot 11:28AM
K5 was the most dangerous exercise to send people to death and criple the legs of most Cambodian. Low wages and low salary are the two methodes to kill people with mal-nutrition and foods shortage. The low wages and low salaries are the same meaning of starving people like Pol Pot. If a leader cannot provide with a propre wages and salary to their public servants, he or she have to be resigned for incompetent leader. If he or she continue to leader with a forces of suppression, these leaders are not a good leader but he is a mafia instead and will be treated as committing a genecide to his or her people. A good leader is a leader with a vision which can only provide good economic and social development. The economic development cannot be succeeded by the sacrifice of the harmony of the society. At present, by allowing his friends, his children and his families to steal people land with military forces is a criminal. Areak Prey

Bullshit, stupid (12:30), no one can give you $100k/yr. job after the down fall of Pol Pot, and we aint gonna let looters and gangs to rule the country. Since we took over, Cambodia is no longer in the dark as it used to be. Our cities are growing everywhere, and only a hand full of people have yet to benefit from our economic boom, which is normal like everywhere else. There is no perfect place on this planet; so, who are you trying to kid?

Anonymous said...

6:20Pm, the opposite. Only a handful have benefitted from Hun Sen's inequitable economic growth. Only Phnom Penh is growing and at a cost to the poor and squatters- stealing their lands to give to Hun Sen's corrupt cronies to develop. Go and look at the countryside. some are starving.

Anonymous said...

Wrong, 6:47, a majority have benefited from PM economic boom.

And stop dreaming. no one is starving anywhere in Cambodia. We have a "Zero Tolerance" policy for starving and famine here. But sure, countryside is a little behind, but that is normal because one one on this planet can build cities and countryside at the same time. Normal people build the city first. Just look at China, Vietnam, Japan, ... and whatever else have we.

Since the UN inception in Cambodia, they brought nothing to Cambodia but foes and woes. Yes, I concur with you that these bad dogs need to be evicted as soonas practical, and have new replacements(if any good ones).

The bottom line is that these dogs need to cooperate and work with us to come us with solutions to ameliarate the concerned issues, and they're welcome to disagree with us but not disagreeable with practically every issues.

Pol Pot converted the country into Agrarian society to benefit China. Hun Sen converted the country into a Kleptocratic society to benefit his elite cronies. And most important of all to make his Hanoi master benefit from poor peasants citizens in the countryside who live with lacking of all the basic needs.

There are people who see the true color, and the persons behind the mask in the CPP regime. 7:14 "We have a "Zero Tolerance" policy for starving and famine here. But sure, countryside is a little behind, but that is normal because one one on this planet can build cities and countryside at the same time. Normal people build the city first."

You seems to be an able person from the remarks above. Some of them are illogical; Your deduction is faulty. I, myself, would like to see Khmer Society progress into a Modern Society, but NOT WITH INFLICTING PAIN & SUFFERING OF DISABLE, FEEBLE, AND UNDERSERVED P0PULATION. Everyone of us doesn't needed to be treated like "dogs". You are calling us dogs by your vacabulary -- make you a blood sucking invertbrate, a leech!

Speaking of the devil ... why do we need the devil advocate, because when the devil is too much in details, it squanders too much of our time.

Hun Sen is digging up his own grave now.
