Thailand, Cambodia to discuss Phra Vihear issue

(BangkokPost.com) - Weerasak Futrakul, permanent secretary to the Foreign Ministry has reportedly been appointed to hold talks with deputy prime minister Sok An of Cambodia on Tuesday to discuss the controversy over making the Phra Vihear temple a Unesco heritage site.

Both parties claim they want to find a solution to rights to a controversial piece of land spanning which surrounds the temple. The temple is Cambodia, but land around it is still in dispute.

The Thai government has offered its full support for Cambodia's proposal to register the temple as a Unesco World Heritage site but plans to propose that a contract be drawn up.

If both governments are unable to reach a deal on the issue Tuesday, they may consider delaying the talks to a later date.

Let get the area developed and create jobs for thousands on both sides. We're all Khmer in that area.

Common sense would say that the access and the rest of the surrounding area should belong to the Preah Vihear temple. The Khmer king was not stupid enough to build it right next to the border.

Hope Sok An will do his best to struggle with Thais over our Preah Vihea temple. Thais is always want to get all of our temples and territory. Unfortunately, we don't have a good government at this time and of course, SRP will do everything for Khmer's interrest if it leads the country.

LOL Dr Loa, if the Khmer King is that smart, why did he lost so much land to the Thai? Stop turning Khmer history into Hollywood, will ya? It's about time for us to learn about our mistakes, wouldn't you think?

We are speaking about the present.
Why insulting dr Lao?
Pourquoi insulter dr Lao?
The problem right now is with Hun Sen and Tea Banh. Ils sont de vrais autruches. They hide until the neighbor took all cambodian's lands. That's why people from the outside wish some government change. With the new government, at least, cambodians can speak freely.
CPP IS COMMUNIST. THEY THREAT EVERYONE.
Sok Anh don't have time with Preah Vihear. His families have too much land to deal at Siem Reap. That's not his problem.

3:03pm, you need to understand history or study history or something because your question is silly and shows that you do not understand the cycle of civilization. study in sociology, you will understand better as it would take to long to try to explain to you on the blog. just to answer you briefly, khmer did have great, powerful kings, just like the romans did, the greek and the egyptian did, however, when those great and powerful kings or rulers died out due to old age or what have you, war seemed to follow as there were no set law and order like in modern time. back then, in history all over the world, great civilization comes and goes. in sociology, they called in the cycle of civilization. so due to civil conflict, etc, cambodia lost a huge chunk of its former territories under our great and powerful khmer kings of the angkor civilization. but, that's not enough, you need to study more in sociology and the history or the world, etc. i suggest you stay in school.

Whatever Cambodia will do, just do not include Thailand with anything to do with us about Preah Vihear. Don't be fooled by their sweet talks and trying to connecting most people living the area and around are all Khmers. They will try to do anything to get an inch to delay the development of Preah Vihear. This is a modern age case of ThaiThief of Khmer land and ancient culture from their neighbor. How can it be friendly neighbors when once keep bullying the other like that?

the thai will try to justify anything, hoping to be included in the sweet deal that cambodia will be getting from UNESCO world heritage funds. after all they have nothing to lose as they knew very well that the world won't support their wishful claim of cambodia's preah vihear temple. haven't the thai forgotten that cambodians can be as smart as they. what are they thinking of us. cambodia have to stand firm on our sovereignty. even a little delay won't hurt cambodia a bit. i guess they think that they can always fool cambodia. let me remind them that this is the 21st century, not cambodia's dark ages. that was history.

Thanks for your insults and sympathy. I feel pity for those who insult. They have anger and hatred in their heart. According to Buddha, anger or hatred (dosa)is one of the three causes of suffering (dukkha), the other two being greed (lobha) and ignorance (moha). Perhaps such people are suffering.

Dr Lao, stop being a hypocrite. You always charged the Khmer government for not being able to take criticism, and now you show you can't take it either, when we criticized Khmer Kings for being stupid to lose over 80% of Khmer land to foreigners throughout history.
