It's really hard for us to understand as to why this cute looking prince later on in his life decided to join the communist or more bluntly to join his deadly enemies namely the khmer rouge.It's just suicidal or plainly dumb.No matter what ,he will always be blamed as polpot's accomplice in the killing field.
Because before being a King, Sihanouk is a human with needs and feelings. He was corrupted by power and women that made him crazy, as it is making crazy all of our leaders now.
Remembers that he knew what Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouges would have done once in power. He knew perfectly that they would slaugther people, but he was too eager to take revenge of his own relatives and other people who ousted him from the power in 1970s.
Just look on Ranariddh perveted by young pussies and the ministers and seniors minsiters with a lot of mistressess now....Power provides them the feeling of impunity and to do things beyond morals. Our nation has no moral and value now...

Former king Norodom Sihanouk can be partially blamed for many things that helped attributed towards the decay of Cambodian society. Initially, he had great vision for Cambodia and its people.
It is no doubt that during the Sangkum Reastr Niyum era, Cambodia enjoyed quite a marvelous period of stability and prosperity. However, due to the polarization of political ideologies of the Cold War and the territorial disrespect of Cambodia's neighbors, Sihanouk ended up having to bargain with regional as well as global powers in an attempt to all himself with whoever is going win at the end. This resulted in a lot of flip-flopping within political alignments. At the end, Cambodia would have been doomed either way whether or not Sihanouk or one of the Sisowaths on the throne because it was too weak of a nation in many respects. Cambodia had many options but each option was deadly and it was like choosing the lesser of two evils for him. However, Sihanouk's political maneuvering caused Cambodia to dig itself further into a hole that it couldn't climb out of...and this whole eventually became our grave.
However we look at it, Cambodia was doom from the start and Sihanouk only helped accelerated the star-crossed fate of this nation.

If Sihanouk did not abdicate and stayed out of politic altogether , and let the democratic system take root in Cambodian's society or let the people decided their affair or their own destiny ,i think Cambodia may have a different look , and he(sihanouk) may still be revered by his people until today much like his counterpart in Thailand or other word the Thai's monarchy .Don't you agree ? But this person loved to be involved in politic and blindfully thought that he owned Cambodia, and with that thought in mind ,he think he can do anything at will ,i.e let vietcong stayed on our soil and proclaimed neutrality , cut off relation with U.S and established diplomatic relation with VIETCONG etc.. and that had caused tons of problems for all of us, and ultimately led to his downfall.And now he's whinning why people mistreating him ? .It's just pathetic.

The tragedy of King Norodom Sihanouk is he was born Khmer. If Thailand or Vietnam has leader like Norodm Sihanouk, Cambodia will be finished.
I hope after this King dies Thailand and Vietnam can divide this Kingdom to two, so no more Khmers fight with Khmers spillover Thailand and Vietnam anymore
Normally, the world would have regarded him as a comic character out of a French movie - just look at the last picture. But he became a piece on the chessboard.
