PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodia and Thailand pledged on Wednesday to start marking out disputed bits of border next month and withdraw troops in January to avoid a repeat of last month's armed clashes at the 900-year-old Preah Vihear temple.
After three days of negotiations by a joint border committee in the Cambodian resort town of Siem Reap, Thai Foreign Minister Sompong Amornwiwat said "99 percent" of the problems had been resolved.
He did not elaborate other than to say the agreement had to be approved by Thailand's parliament, as required by the constitution.
At a joint press conference broadcast on Cambodian television, Cambodian foreign minister Hor Namhong said the troop withdrawal would make way for joint teams to clear the thousands of landmines that litter much of the jungle-clad border.
"We have decided to plant border pillars in the disputed area first because we are trying not to have a repeat of the conflict," Hor Namhong said.
One Thai and three Cambodian soldiers died in last month's exchange of rifle and rocket fire, which both sides accused the other of starting.
The Hindu temple, which sits on the escarpment that forms the natural border, has been a source of tension for generations.
The International Court of Justice awarded it to Cambodia in 1962, but the ruling did not determine the ownership of 1.8 square miles (4.6 sq km) of scrub next to the ruins, leaving considerable scope for disagreement.

Reuter got it all wrong again! This is not a Hindu temple but a Khmer Preah Vihear temple which was built by the Khmer King on Khmer land! This temple has a fucken name why can the fucking Reuter accept that!
Any fucking border markers will not be on Khmer land that base on 1904 international map which the Thai leaders help drew the fucking map with the French! what rankles most khmer people and even international observers were the fact that thailand don't understand the law of the statue of limitation because without this law the entire world would be fighting each other and it would be a deja vu all over again. you don't just accept the treaty then waited for the right opportunity to violate it again and again. this is a pattern for thailand, and in their own head, they think it is right for them to violate international treaty between nations. common, everybody can see this. people aren't that dump like thailand seem to think they are. if the icj said thailand had ten years of statue of limitation to repeal with new evidence, that was just that, not 45 years or a century later. it's not a rocket scientist to figure this out!

Of course, Thai don't but that's just because they don't want to be seen as backing down. That's why both agree to withdraw so no one seems to be the losers. Khmer never want this in the first place anyways. Khmer never wanted to deploy troops because it costs money to rally troops and put them in the frontline. It comes at the cost of losing revenue of the tourists to Preah Vihear on Khmer side. So, withdrawing Khmer troops mean Khmer can get back to getting tourists to come to our Preah Vihear and profit of the tickets and the cost of deploying troops is also gone.
How is that a bad thing for us Khmer? Only stupid blind extreme nationalist idiots would want to the troops to stay there after Thai withdraw. Those idiots want to look tough but doesn't have a grip of the reality and the reasons to withdraw.

Many of us had been arguing that Preah Vihear is belong to Khmer and Thais claimed as theirs.
I am interested to know since all leaders in both countries are not really pure of their countries of origin, does it matter which country get to control the area? Wouldn't it better whoever can prove that they are better leaders and can look after better get to have it. This is for the sake of the innocent people who lives around there on both sides.
Preah Vihear will still remain as Preah Vihear. It's identity will never get lost. It doesn't matter it's on Thai side or Cambodian side.
