WATER festival boats sponsored by the former National Police Chief Hok Lundy, who was killed in a weekend helicopter crash, and RCAF General Sok Saem, who died alongside Cambodia's top cop, both won their early heats in Tuesday's Water Festival races after organisers decided they would compete, despite the deaths.
Soun Bun Oeurn, committee director of Hok Lundy's boat Dysencheybaromeibopia, and Saemsencheybaromeisvaychhrum, the boat sponsored by Sok Saem, said, "We are very sorry for losing our best supporters, if compared to other boats we got the best support".
"We would like their spirits to help both of these boats achieve victory," Soun Bun Oeurn told the Post.
With a long history of successes, the two boats were expected to do well in this year's races. With the deaths of their patrons, they claimed they were more determined than ever.
Both craft were built in 1998 and are crewed by 85 rowers.
They represent Hok Lundy's native Svay Rieng province, where his helicopter crashed on Sunday evening.

Hok Lundy's soul is locked up in hell for his crime.
His soul will be locked in a dark prison in hell for eternity.
Every time I enter a public washroom it remind me of Hok Lundy. He stinks from miles away, must be the manifestation of his spirit.
It is too bad that he could live to see his boat bearing his name intially win in the Water Festival.
I would like to see other top Cambodian officials boats win the race as long as they are dead.

if you or anyone else knows or understands anything about the human psychology, it is called the coping mechanism. it may seem weird or odd to some because of differences in culture and belief, etc... but this is how most khmer people cope with losses by having a strong animist belief that the dead spirit is well life, just without their physical body and that by praising and making offerings ( sen in khmer), it help to ease their emotional pain and suffering towards their grief, unhappiness, losses, fears, etc... remember, in psychology, it is just symbolism, and although it may seem strange to the unbelievers, to the believers, it is healing and very therapeutic, to say the least. got to respect khmer culture.
