All in the (half-)family: Ranariddh appointed chief advisor to King Sihamoni

Cambodian Prince Ranariddh appointed chief advisor to King Sihamoni

PHNOM PENH, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prince Norodom Ranariddh has been appointed King Norodom Sihamoni's chief advisor, English-Khmer language newspaper the Cambodia Daily on Wednesday quoted royal sources as saying.

King Sihamoni appointed his half-brother in a royal decree dated Dec. 6, with the prince's new position holding a rank equivalent to prime minister, said Oum Daravuth, member of the Royal Palace cabinet.

The appointment came as the culmination of months of speculation that the prince would abandon his political career fora role in the Royal Palace.

Ranariddh used to head the royalist Funcinpec Party and served as prime minister of the first government of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

He was dumped as party president in late 2006 and then sued by Funcinpec for embezzling money while selling party estate.

He received sentence over the lawsuit, stayed overseas for months, and finally escaped imprisonment due to a pardon from the king.

King Sihamoni should not have chosen him. The king could be assasinated. He could not even lead his own parties, how can he be advisor to the king.

What kind of advice will he advise his half-brother. He is a totally useless.

He may advise his brother to have lot of women in the palace. May be pretty soon we will have a new prince or princess.

Oh my Khmer people! When will we be out of the darkness.

The king is under pressure to produce an heir. The plicky plince can advice him on matters relating to WOMEN and that stuffs.

Goodluck king, I personally would not let my female family walk pass the plicky plince. He should be named the Chey Cheta V.

it's just an advisory role, nothing more. plus, prince ranarid is retired already. but i guess people just don't like the fact that it's the family member. where is the example in leadership? then, they wonder why mr. hun sen also wants to keep his family members in the gov't. see what i mean, same style, just different individual. maybe it's the asian way? go figure!

is it good or bad to do so?

i think advisory status is not power like the prime minister has. it is like a lameduck. in the USA, ex-presidents are lameduck and can also give important advice to the current president.

It's a waste of money to pay for this corrupted & power-hungry advisor. God saves the King!

FYI, he has JD degree not PHD. When Thai invaded Cambodia and retreated back to its land, along with them they brought most of educated Khmer and left alone the peasants and the weak behind. All the Khmer royal members for decades treats Khmer and the country as their chattels. Educated Khmer scholars during Sihanouk's rule were few to allow studying abroad without or limited government aid. The royal courts intentions are to deprive Khmer from erudite for easy control of the Kingdom. Today, only a handful of peasants and uneducated few are still kowtow the royalists, yet, little they know that genocide crafted by Pol Pot regime was derived from an incompetent and power ravenous leader, their revered king-Father,Sihanouk. As the ancient proverb says: tree leaves won't fall far from its trunk, thus,Ranariddh's mindset and conduct are averted. The cease of royalty in Cambodia is certain, and public state is preferred by majority Khmer for its future survival and to defying from foreign control.

5:55 AM, you tell them more my man, it seems to be that they are winding over and scold over of the King. They forgot that King is Khmer, not Youn. Hun Sen, and Vietnam have such a good plan that set the king up and destroyed the Kingdom. Especially, if you go to Cambodia, you can ask people there about the 1997 event. People will tell that Hun Sen and Hok Lundy supported by Vietnamese army to conquer our Khmer troops without alarming. I am now telling you, I LOVE THE KING, BUT I DO NOT LOVE YOUN IN CAMBODIA.

can't we all love each other? after all, we all are khmer people who happened to share one nation of cambodia, so why keep on fighting? we have to stop fighting! god bless cambodia.
