Buddhist monks and Khmer Krom Federation activists from 6 countries, including the United States, Canada, France, The Netherlands, Australia and also from Cambodia have met on Saturday in Melbourne, Australia to show the sufferings of Khmer Krom people to the world as they are waging a legal struggle to take back Kampuchea Krom.

Chairman of the Khmer Krom Buddhist Federation, Venerable Ly Pov, said from Australia that the meeting this Saturday is to raise the awareness of the sufferings of Khmer Krom under the yoke of the Vietnamese colonisation in order to coincide with the 60th International Day of Human Rights.

The Venerable Ly Pov said: “All the delegates will come from all the countries. They will raise the awareness about the communist Vietnamese oppression on the Khmer Krom people who have been oppressed by Vietnam for a long, long time, many centuries ago. Khmer Krom, as we all know, have suffered miserably. Nowadays, it is because we have the Buddha, the Dharma, the monks and the Buddhist temples there that keep Kampuchea Krom still existed until today. But these people are ruled by communist Vietnam. So, Khmer Krom all over the world such as in the United States, Canada, France, New Zealand and Australia have gather to show the sufferings and the tragedy of Khmer Krom to the world, the UN, local and foreign guests see how bad communist Vietnam treated the Khmer Krom people.”

According to history, Kampuchea Krom was officially ceded to Vietnam by the French protectorate authority on 4th June, 1949.

The Khmer Krom Federation, an organisation that is waging a diplomatic and legal struggle to take back Kampuchea Krom, hopes that the raising of awareness of Khmer Krom sufferings through various international meetings will help convince the world community to help return Kampuchea Krom back to Cambodia’s control.//

I think that is somewhat misleading representation of Khmer Krom desires. Or rather that is putting words into their mouth, to say that they want to return it back to Cambodia's control.

If Khmer Krom can gain some level of self-determination, why on earth would they subjugate themselves to another indirect Vietnamese colonization?

They would probably have a greater connection and easy with business and family traveling with Kampuchea, but incorporating back (if it were to gain independence) is just a terrible strain and horrible choice considering Cambodia government is so corrupt and directly under shadows of Hanoi.

Also why would they want to help give Vietnamese more free travel into Cambodia? It defeats the purpose of saving Khmer culture from vietnamization when you open all the Vietnamese opportunist from Saigon and elsewhere to freely go anywhere in Cambodia now as they would become citizen of this new "independent" state.

yeah, I think we should be careful and take more sensitive look at what the Khmer people of Vietnam really desires and careful as to not put words into their mouth that may misrepresent them or undermine their struggle and credits.

I'd say good luck to them. The King has left it too long to claim it back. In my opinion, it is o.k that Khmer Krom is under whoever's colonies as long as they don't loose their identity and culture. I think the Khmer Krom Federation activists should focus on claiming their identity and equality instead of claiming it back. I don't think any Khmer is good enough to be the individual ruler yet.

In addition to what I said in 7.12am. Hypathically if down the track they manage to claim it back. Khmer Krom should not be part of Cambodia. They should be an independent country and hopefully the same for Khmer Surin.

I agree with 7:12 Am. Norodom Sihanouk, Our king father have so much to hide from the Khmer People.
Him and Ho Chi Minh have some shaddy issues that we don't know about. Anyway, All the world know that if you're a religious man should never get involve in politic. I see thos MP chasing the monks and it seem to me like it just a political motivation. I don't even belief it's a real monks. Ask our King Father what happen to Kampuchea Krom? Is it still Khmer Land and also the disputed border along Khmer and Thai.

I don't know a lot about Budhism, but I don't see anything wrong with monks peacefully protesting especially when it is for the better of humanity.

How did Budha triumed over many evils? That's becaused he defended himself from harms made by the evils.

As for that matter I think fighting back evils for the better of humanity is the core in any relegion. Therefore monks can certainly do that and not just Budhist monk but monks from any relegion.

The pretext of monks can't hold peaceful protest is wrong. It is ok during time of peace and prosperity, but when the common people are suffering monks are entitled to help defend the people's rights and reduce their suffering. Example of monks protested including in Cambodia in the 50s, during the Vietnam war, in Tibet, and recently in Burma.

Khmer krom and khmer surin must be part of cambodia. they were former cambodian territories, so they must be returned back to cambodia. to let them be independent would to let them be under vietnam and thailand. i think when kampuchea krom and khmer surin freed them self and joined cambodia, cambodia will be prosperous.

Anonymous said...

What? Who stole Khmer's land? The Khmer can't live together in peace, and some of them just asked their friends from the neighboring countries to help them to gain independence from Cambodia. It is no crime to defense yourself and your family from those kings and queens who abused you.

Khmer in srok Yuon is not Khmer. They are Yuon, and they have no business protesting in Cambodia.

And that goes for Khmer in srok Siem and srok Lao as well.
