A senior Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) official said that the SRP will hold a special congress on the 31st of January to devise party's strategies for the upcoming elections for Phnom Penh, civic, provincial and district councils.
Mrs. Ke Sovannaroth (pictured), secretary-general of the SRP, told Radio Free Asia on Tuesday afternoon that this special congress is aimed at strengthening party's policies at the communal levels.
She said: "(We hold a congress) because in 2009 there will be a non-universal election to elect the councillors at the civic and provincial levels. And because the electors are the members of the communal councils and this election is not a universal election, so the party decided to hold its extraordinary congress."
This special congress will be attended by 2500 party's activists from all communes, districts and provinces.
Mrs. Ke Sovannaroth said that the aim of this special congress is to prepare the members of the communal councils to elect the members of the provincial and civic councils.
She said: "This congress is aimed at gathering the SRP members at the communal levels and the local SRP leadership for the purpose of re-strengthening the structure of the party. Secondly, we aim at devising the party's strategy for the elections of the civic and provincial councillors."
The SRP was founded on the 9th of November, 1995. The party's structures include a 15-member Permanent Committee, a 93-member Steering Committee and a national structure in the 24 provinces as well as overseas.
The SRP has 2 senators and 26 members of parliament and 2660 communal councillors.
Mrs. Ke sovannaroth said: "The SRP has many branches overseas. This means that we have party structure from top to bottom in our overseas branches. From top to bottom means that we have leadershi structure from national, provincial, district, communal as well as at village levels."
The SRP had participated in national elections three times and communal elections two times.

What a shit load of crocks? As long Ah Scam rainxy is the only PM nominee, the party is blatantly a joke in Democracy society.

Now that the election is over, the opposition parties have four years to get themselves organized and come up with a winning strategy. The work must start now, don’t wait. Any party that campaigns against the presence of illegal yuon settlers in our country will SURELY win the next election.
Dream on, the CPP will not be easy to defeat. You'll need a party with winners, not tomato pickers.
I didn't say there is an easy victory. Oppositions must work not only harder but also smarter if they want to win the next election.
any political party should not be based on separatist group or separate politics entity to itself because if it is so, are they going to have two armed forces, two of everything in the gov't of cambodia? that wouldn't work out well because it would just cause problem with arguments and differentiation among the groups in cambodia; not good for the unity of the khmer people. please think seriously about the bad influence or bad repercussion from this. however, it the opponent party are just there to compete in the election, or to do a check and balance system of gov't etc... that serves the nation well, then, there should not be a problem. so, please be careful with how the group is running. of course, cambodia is trying very hard to accommodate or allow the freedom of thinking, expression, and so on, but it would go against the constitution to allow to have some type of separatist organization that try to split the nation into two opposing political entity. that is too dangerous and would do a great disservice to the people of cambodia and cambodia as a country as well.
let me remind everyone that in the USA, for example, although, there are two poltical parties i.e. the democratic party and the republican party competing during the national election there, there are only one armed forces, one gov't etc... so, this is what cambodia's different political should try to avoid of having two entity of gov't or separatist gov't. thank you.

the purpose is not to divide the nation; if it is, then it won't be popular in cambodia. that said, of course, khmer people in cambodia want changes for the better of our country and for all khmer people and citizens. good luck and god bless.
