Cambodian opposition leader loses immunity

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - A Cambodian parliamentary committee has suspended the immunity of opposition leader Sam Rainsy, a move he condemned on Friday as unconstitutional and intended to silence criticism of Prime Minister Hun Sen.

The French-educated former finance minister, who leads a party named after himself, was stripped of his immunity for refusing to pay a $2,500 fine for defaming Hun Sen's ruling Cambodian People's Party during last year's election.

Rather than paying the fine to what he says is a systemically corrupt government, he had offered to give the same amount to a hospital.

Under Cambodia's constitution, only the full National Assembly, not its Permanent Committee, can strip a sitting Member of Parliament of immunity from prosecution.

"They are definitely taking a short-cut. They definitely violated the constitution, which means that they want to silence me," Sam Rainsy told Reuters.

When stripped of his immunity in the past, he has often fled Cambodia shortly afterwards, normally to France.

A former Khmer Rouge soldier who has been in charge for the last 23 years, Hun Sen won a landslide in July's election but remains vulnerable in Phnom Penh to Sam Rainsy, who commands support from the capital's increasingly educated youth.

Sam Rainsy ain't a great poliSikain, but who else is evidently better than him? Nobody!

According to my stupidity's opinion, he should not run away to Paris or else where for what he constitutionally thinks it right, otherwise the rest of his life will be continuously kept running as an experimental rat.

If you are patriotically involving in the opposition Khmer's PoliSick, your life is already meant death.

i wonder when will the western countries going to stop supporting and giving sanctuary to sam rainsy because he and his political clique seemed to be so out of touch with the real cambodia or the ordinary khmer people in cambodia who went through so much pain and suffering since the civil war, the KR atrocity, the vietcong invasion, injustice, hardship, etc...? when are they going to wake up for change as well? i mean someone has gotten to tell sam rainsy to cut the crap out; he's doing a disservice to the real, ordinary people of cambodia with is trouble-making, good for nothing way that only create division among people in cambodia and does nothing good for the country! if the west still support this way, then they, too, don't understand the real situation in cambodia. please get out you eyeglasses and see the real cambodia for a change. sam rainsy, in a way, is a political instigator that always stirs up brown water for no apparent reason. how could he lead cambodia if the majority of khmer people in cambodia do not support or favor he? please think about it! in order to lead a country, you have to have the majority of local people of that country supported you, but if your political is just a minor political group or political activists as i see it, then how could you win and able to allow to lead the country. an individual like him needs to understand that in order to even get your foot in the door in cambodia, you have to have majority of khmer people there favor or like you for what you are doing. however, i just don't see that for sam rainsy in cambodia. he's just a politically ambitious or motivated individual who was fortunate to have the western nations supported him or giving him sanctuary to hit and run when he brewed up problems in cambodia! that's all. he's that everything in cambodia. please wake up and see the real cambodia! he and his clique are seen as just political activists who want changes and freedom, which cambodia already beginning to have now, however, other than that, we all need to really question him and see his real motivation. he is living in a la la land and so blinded by his personal ambition that he forget that cambodia is bigger that him; and it's really not about him! hello! thank you and may god bless cambodia.

sam rainsy is just a smart-alec type! if you ask the majority of khmer people in cambodia, they can tell you that! he can't win without their liken and support! hello! wake up! cambodia is really not about him!

yes, under the old sangkum reastr niyom and the KR, sam rainsy will be shot and condemned to death already for being a trouble-maker like he is doing everyday in cambodia. lucky for him, this is a new, reformed gov't under the new era of reformed leadership in cambodia, the administration of samdech hun sen and all the people in this gov't who forgave him many times. can you imagine him under any other regime of cambodia in the past? he would be history, to say the least! and he doesn't appreciate that! god bless cambodia.

Why does this guy create too many problems?

H.E Sam Reinsy will pay the fine to NEC or offer the same amount to Kuntha Bopha Hospital, i.e he will spend such money. Why does he make complicate? I really don't support him in this case.
It is very easy way, just pay it and finish it.

Cambodia cannot afford to have leader that never win a court case on this planet. Just imagine fighting the Thai for territory in ICJ. If you can't win, you lose your land.

If Samransy want to win SOmdeach HUN SEN he have to let someone else in his party do it.May be someone in his party get good idea than him.And Somdeach HUN SEN he said if opposition party win he will get out his job.But no one win the seat. so how the winner get out their job and let the loser take the seat? Never heard that in the world. In USA they always change the first compaigning not the president.

Yeah, but Cambodia is not the US of A. The loser here will never united people to support the winner because they are afraid of losing their voters for the next election.

I am not a cpp supporter, but the SRP will never win the primary election against the Hun Sen regime. SRP is weak and don't have strong support from any of the importance western country, but only on France and other small European nations that voice don't provoke a dent to cpp. Why he's not aggressive by lobbying the Washington for his movements? That's beyond one's comprehension. Hun Sen is aggressive leader with Hanoi support and they see the SRT is the next vulnerable adversary to downgraded. The SRP merits are rays of hope to many Khmer, but it will not be outdone to topple the mighty strong CPP. It, however, paves the ways for the next stronger leader to follow suite--if that isn't too late to become the next Viet's satellite state.

Nope, the SRP is no rays of hope for shit. It is more like rays to burn the Khmer culture and heritage to oblivion.

"the administration of samdech hun sen and all the people in this gov't who forgave him many times."

False

Hun Sen and his Regime, never forgive Sam Rainsy.

That is why Hun Sen order his Regime to lift Sam Rainsy's parliamentary immunity so they can send him to jail.

Hun Sen Regime attempted to assassinate Sam Rainsy many times.

After

FBI investigation on peaceful demonstration for Justice Reform on March 30, 1997 in Cambodia.

U.S. Senate Foreign Committee Investigation on peaceful demonstration for Justice Reform on March 30, 1997 in Cambodia.

It get to the point that the U.S. State Department warn Hun Sen, if anything happen to Sam Rainsy, Hun Sen is personally responsible.

Hun Sen wish that nothing will happen to Sam Rainsy.

Hun Sen said to his Death Squad that what ever they do, not to touch the guy with glasses.

From that time on, you will never see or hear assassination attempt against Sam Rainsy ever again.

All Hun Sen can do to Sam Rainsy is through legal process.

Under Hun Sen Regime, legal process is violate the constitution and violate the law of the land.
It's had happen many times.
A good example would be Cheam Channy's case.

CPP supporter, you are so dumb.
You are making all CPP members look bad.
