Mr. Hun Sen’s Curses And the Thai Bully

Op-Ed by Khmerization
13th February, 2010

“The Thai bully and its hegemonic ambition of expansionism will always be an obstacle and a hurdle to a peaceful and good neighbourly co-existence between the two nations. Only when Thailand gives up its hegemony and expansionist motives toward Cambodia, can a peaceful and good neighbourly co-existence between the two neighbours be realised and achieved.”

Mr. Hun Sen’s vitriolic diatribes against the prime minister of Thailand, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, will undoubtedly reflect bad on the reputation of all Khmer people that we are a bunch of uncivilised and uneducated race. And his profane outbursts against another country’s head of government is inexcusable and cannot be justified as he is also a head of a government. By launching a scathing personal attack on the prime minister of Thailand, which we had an unresolved border conflicts with, will further complicate the matter and undoubtedly delay the resolution of the sensitive border issues.

Mr. Hun Sen’s tirades against Mr. Abhisit, which come in the forms of curses, have puzzled even the many Cambodian nationalists. His dare to Mr. Abhisit to swear in front of sacred objects that Thai troops did not invade Cambodia is acceptable if his language is not disturbingly un-diplomatic. The phrase such as “If you don’t tell the truth about Siem [Thai] troops’ invasion of Cambodia on 15 July [2008], let the magic objects break your neck, may you be shot, be hit by a car, may you be shocked by electricity or [may you be shot] by misfired guns”, cannot be justified when it comes from the mouth of a head of a government.

Mr. Hun Sen’s curses are also directed at Mr. Abhisit’s family as well. “Will Abhisit swear on having all his family members be killed and having them [perished] in a plane crash, if [he still claims] that Siamese troops did not invade Cambodia?”, he added.

He accused Thailand of not only invading Cambodian territory, but cheated on history as well. “Not only did Thailand actually invaded [Cambodia], it also invaded and cheated on history by changing the name of Preah Vihear temple to Phra Viharn”, he continued.

He chided Abhisit as the worst prime minister Thailand has ever had. “Among all of the Siem [Thai] PMs, nobody is as bad as Ah Neung [derogatory term for ‘this guy’], he said.

“Ah Nis [derogatory for “this guy”] is crazy, he is all confused, he deserves to be scolded at. This guy has no family honour”, he went on.

These sorts of language is unbecoming of a prime minister of a country. However, Mr. Hun Sen’s un-diplomatic outbursts and antics were borne out of his anger and frustration with the Thai objection of his scheduled visit to Cambodia’s Ta Moan Thom temple on 8th February. He feel humiliated that, as a prime minister of a sovereign country, he needs to ask a permission from a foreign country to visit his country’s temple. His frustration and humiliation led to these sorts of uncalled-for outbursts.

It is very diplomatic of Abhisit to keep his cool not to retaliate. On the surface, he did not retaliate in words, not because he didn’t want to, but because, deep down, he has a hidden motive to advance Thailand’s border agenda. This rationale is made based on the subsequent Thai military manoeuvres afterward. After Mr. Hun Sen’s antics, Mr. Abhisit stealthily ordered large deployments of Thai troops, numbering to 8000, according to some estimates, into the border areas in a provocation attempt to stir up Mr. Hun Sen into a real fire fight which Mr. Abhisit hopes to deliver a knock out military punch of Mr. Hun Sen in the same way Mr. Hun Sen landed him a verbal knock out punch.

In this dispute, due to military in-equilibrium, Mr. Hun Sen, with an unmatched military power to a Thai military might, has to resort to personal verbal antics and outbursts to fight back against the Thai bully and invasion.

Mr. Hun Sen’s vitriolic tirades against Mr. Abhisit serve no purpose for the Cambodian cause and will undoubtedly reflect on his already-tarnished personal integrity and gangster-like image. He risked becoming an international pariah in the eyes of the international community if he continues these sorts of uncivilised outbursts against the head of government of another country.

I am neither proud nor am I an apologist of Mr. Hun Sen’s un-diplomatic and obscene tirades against a head of government of a neighbouring country, but I can understand his anger and frustration. While I am indifferent to his crude styles, I, however, am particularly concerned about the international ramification of his obnoxious and unacceptable un-statesmanlike behaviours have on Cambodia and the Cambodian people generally.

While I abhor Mr. Hun Sen’s latest un-diplomatic language and his antics against Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, I unequivocally deplore the Thai bully and stand over tactics vis-à-vis Cambodia over border issues. The Thai bully and hegemonic ambition was the root cause of the present recurring Khmer-Thai border conflicts and Mr. Hun Sen’s latest rage.

The Thai blatant aggression, conducted with hegemonic and expansionist motives, can only be viewed with contempt. If Thailand is insatiable with the annexation of more than 10 Khmer provinces in the past, then Thailand, and Abhisit for that matter, will never cease their drives for more annexations of Khmer territories at present and into the future. Thailand’s insatiable appetite for the conquer of Cambodian territories is the root cause of all conflicts in the past and present between these two nations. The Thai bully and its hegemonic ambition of expansionism will always be an obstacle and a hurdle to a peaceful and good neighbourly co-existence between the two nations. Only when Thailand gives up its hegemony and expansionist motives toward Cambodia, can a peaceful and good neighbourly co-existence between the two neighbours be realised and achieved.

Wonderful analysis Khmerization. Hun Sen is deserving to do that because of his self-ignorance and self-arrogance. Because of his ignorance, Yuan has taken advantage over him and he is performing as a good lackey now..

According to Hun Sen's profane outburst and his subsequent political scolding maneuvering, it shows his true characteristics as a non-vision leader. But why all those colleages are following him because some of them are desiring only wealth, fame and power.

Finally, they all will die nonsensely.

100 % agree with khmerisation analysis. I know from very reliable source that hun sen did not sleep at preah vihea during his four days visit but comes back to sleep every night in siemreap. His courage has its limit.

Sukhotei was Khmer, Siam was Chinese and Thailand is England and that's why we have an English PM runs for Thailand who has no clue of Thai root and Thai history.

Khmerization, do you know that Thai citizens and Westerners living in Thailand say Hun Sen's remark was undiplomatic, but it did hit the point? That's why Abhisit had nothing to retaliate. You should read a bit more before praing the opponent: "It is very diplomatic of Abhisit to keep his cool not to retaliate".

One more thing, you're not a military expert and should not understate our military strength. Lon Nol's Army was much better equipped that Khmer Rouge, yet the KR prevailed in many battles.

Assuming this commentary is correct about Thailand ambition for expansion, Cambodian leaders need to wake up and start to organize its military better. Johan McCane once said, "talk softly but carry a big stick." That is what Cambodia needs to start doing. Perhaps every male reaching a certain need to be enlisted, just like in Israel.

I have no doubt that Thailand is overwhelmingly more powerful militarily, Cambodia needs to make the Thai understand at what price are they willing to pay to throw their weights around. To do that Cambodia must prove itself a worthy opponent on the battle field? That can be accomplished through a disciplined, organized, and willing to sacrifice fighting force. If you hit a school bully in the right place once or twice he will think twice the next time he wants to cause trouble. I think to an extend Laos did just this in the early 1980s in the border dispute with Thailand. Based on what I read there were hundreds of Thai soldiers sent home on body bags sort of speak.

This commentary paint such a grim picture for Cambodia because the author only look at the size of Thailand. Cambodia with current resouces can work itself out of this predicament if its leaders' use their heads.

So stop barking and start biting when the time is right.

Frankly, I am not impressed by Thai military strength. If Thailand is stupid enough to go to war over an antique relic that is internationally recognized as Cambodia's property, Hun Sen will have the legitimacy to mobilize male population fit to fight to go to the front.

It is sad to see that some call himself Khmerization but written an article that serve the Thai propaganda. There are many points that are completely incorrect facts. I think Khmerization did not listen to both sides, but only get the incorrect information base on twisted and mininformation by the Bangkok Post and the Nation.

The first incorrect information is that Hun Sen cure Abhisit, but in face Hun Sen did not curse Abhisit or any Thai official, he only dare them to swear the oath if they said they never invade or sent troop into Cambodia soil.

Second in correct information is that Hun Sen got angry because he cannot visit Ta Moan Temple.
That is not true because Hun Sen never plan to visit Ta Moan temple in the first place. It was on his border visit schedule.

Third, Hun Sen never ask Thai for any permission, but Thai general asked Hun Sen permission to come to greet him in Cambodian soil at Preah Vihear.

Fourth, the notion that Thai has big millitary and Khmer cannot match with them in both country go to war, that is very naive analysis. History show that Thai military is not good at fighting jungle warfare. They fought short border war with Lao and Lao beat them up real good.

You need to know that currently Khmer military are expert in jungle warfare, their many former KR soldiers who are in the rank and in leadership. They also has new modern equipments. A few clashes between Thai military and Khmer prove that Khmer can beat them handily. Every invasion attempted by Thai military are beaten back.

So in conclusion, Khmer military is not weak, and if they want to invade, they will pay a heavy price.

Hun Sen may use crude language, but he is right, and the truth is on his side.

Abhisit may say nice things, but behind are rotten agenda. It is like a guy said: " Wow, you are have nice house, but I think it is mine and I am going to steal it from you" Yeah, diplomatic language, but behind is a wicked intention.

Well written comment 10:30, Hun Xen language toward Abhisit may not be very deplomatic, but very straight forward and to the point. No sugar coated.

agree, until siem stop being greedy and bullying cambodia can cambodia and khmer people want to bilaterally develop with them. as long as siem continue to live in the dark age and wanted to steal from cambodia it will only siem's dream to get cambodia to like them or wanted to do anything with them. siem must stop bullying and stealing and being greedy with cambodia! their power won't last forever as people nobody on earth can live forever, really! think about it, ok!

Thai must stop its bullying to Cambodia. This is not the time of 50 years ago that one individual can go around bully another country anymore.

This is very transparency era. People or the world can see you within a blink.

Cambodia doesn't look to Thai as a super power country. Cambodia doesn't scare Thailand a bit.

Not event scare of Thai at all!!!

SF Truth. Human is more than important than hardware. In essence, the military in-equilibrium between Thai’s military and that of the Cambodian’s military that mentioned is irrelevant. It is irrelevant because all factors and facts are unproven. All it was proven were that a few armed clashes between the two nations, consequently Thai suffered more casualties. This is we can logically understand that mightier weapon does not equate victory.

I agree with Khmerization's analysis. When Hun Sen announced that he will visit border areas, he did mention that he will visit Preah Vihear and Ta Moan Thom temples.

About the military in-equilibrium, it is true that Thailand has far more military superior over Cambodia.

Thailand has 300,000 troops- Cambodia has 140,000.

Thailand has more than 300 jet fighters, Cambodia had none.

Thailand has more than 1,000 tanks- Cambodia had less than 100.

Thailand has one air-craft carrier and nearly 1,000 naval ships- Cambodia has a few small vessels.

Thailand has more than 1,000 military helicopters- Cambodia has only a few old military helicopters.

With this, it is hard to see Cambodia can win any war against Thailand should full scale war breaks out.

I think Khmerization criticized Hun Sen gangster-like outbursts not because he supports Thailand or Abhisit, but because, as a PM of a country, Hun Sen had made Cambodia and Cambodians look like an uncivilized nation and people.

He has the right to be upset with Thailand, but he has to say it in a diplomatic way, this international diplomacy.

I think it is a WORSE STATEMENT from a person who considered oneself as a Khmer person defending khmer interest. Hun sen may use undiplomatic language to abhisit but you use worse ill language against Khmer as a whole and you think and your band are better than Hun sen? Why you need to paint your, polpot or hun sen ill doing on Khmer people who are victims of your people ill acts? I know that you and your band only want hun sen to look bad to make you and your band look better but your ignorant ill doing not only hurts hun sen but the whole Khmer including yourself,

so ill pathetic

Hun Sen's uncivilized speech has only harmed his own fame and Cambodian people.

We must learn to accept reality and change it from now.

We need to use international law and diplomatic speech to penetrate Thailand, not to curse or swear at them.

I'm responsible of my own act, you yours as Hun se responsible of his ill doing, why you need to paint polpot, khmer rouge, or hun ill doing or crimes on khmer people who are victims of these people. I can understand if you criticize or fight against polpot, sihanouk or hun sen for their ill doing but to paint the crimes or the ill doing on Khmer people who are yet victims of these youn slaves, that’s beyond my intelligence - Then what you are different from these people

that's so ill and responsible

6:10 AM, but hun sen is pm of cambodia so he represents cambodia and cambodian people. also he is a cambodians, so his foul and profane language will make foreigners think that if cambodian pm talk like that may be all cambodians think like that too, get it?

hun sen is a pm, not a gangster, so he has to be diplomatic and use international laws and international diplomacy to deal with other countries and leaders. to talk like a gangster will not help cambodia's cause, instead it will reflect bad on cambodia, cambodian people, but especially on hun sen himself.

If war breaks out, Cambodia will surely beats the crap out of Thailand as the Thais has no experience in jungle warfare but conventional warfare only.
