Cambodian vigilante mob kills two bandits: police

Angry Cambodian villagers attack three alleged bandits

PHNOM PENH, March 26 (AFP) - A mob of about 400 Cambodians armed with stones, iron bars and wooden sticks, attacked three alleged bandits being held by police, killing two of them, police said Friday.

The incident took place on Thursday night after the three men allegedly used a gun to rob two sisters of their motorcycle on the outskirts of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, said Born Sam Art, police chief of Dangkao district.

He said the women called the police, who engaged in a brief gunfight with the alleged robbers before arresting them.

But about 400 villagers from three nearby communes then "grabbed the robbers from police and attacked them with stones, iron bars, and wooden sticks," Born Sam Art told AFP.

He said two of the bandits were killed on the spot while a third remained critically injured. Police fired warning shots to disperse the vigilante group.

In a bizarre twist, the injured criminal was initially thought to be dead and taken away with the two other bodies, but awoke as Buddhist laymen were preparing to cremate them, Born Sam Art said.

Angry mobs often attempt to take justice into their own hands in Cambodia, where the judicial system is widely believed to be weak and corrupt.

A real tragic pictures, this kind of violence should not happen in the 21th century. No one like bandits or robbers, but we must deal with them according to the rule of law and civilized way. Why did the police let angry mobs kill the bandits before taking them to court? Did the arrested bandits pose any immediate threat to the villagers?

This is an unfortunate event. This action is the result of desperation and survival. Corruption from top down leaves a bad taste in the citizen. Not until the people understand and live a moral an ethic ways of life will cambodia become a leader in justice. Cambodia can set an example and become SEA first truely democratic society, all it takes is a vote.

So I pose this question, Name one South East asian country that is true democratic?

Ok, they are thieves. But how can we kill people without judging them? the risk that is huge for the innocent. our kingdom is doomed to be violent, lawless, no faith, the kingdom of nothingness

I am not totally disagree with all the comments above. But I am sure your thought would coinside if the three mob were to gun point your sister or perhaps kill your family and/or innocent citizens.

Honestly, this villagers action will set a great example to other thieves! Yes, it is unhumae. That's the way to deal with mob.

Will speard these pictures and bogs through Twitters to the world to see the darkside of cruelty still take a stronghold within Cambodians minds and spirits.

This way is a very very affective way to get rid off thieves in Cambodia. Americans should do the same way in America to get rid off thieves, gangs...to light our streets and to save money too.

I urge all gangsters and thieves to take a good look at these pictures and promise yourself to get out of troubles and violents. Otherwise you will end up like this and don't blame any body but yourself.

Anonymous said...

no comment. villagers were just angried with the thieves, so they took justice for themselves. now thieves have to think twice before stealing again! simple as that, i guess! oh, not to mention, it's a wake up call to reform the justice system in cambodia so people don't have to resort to this savage act. it shows the lack of trust with the law, i guess! no body condone this type of act, however, it just goes to show people do not trust the system. that's all!

Anonymous said...

While this is wrong morally and legally, it is a strong signal about strong connection between citizens and their community. That is something to be proud of in a way. In most places around the world, America for example, you could get assaulted in the streets and people would just pass by and don't give a shit. That is something about that if you ask me.

Villagers should also do that to them corrupted government officials who rob their farmland and their livelihood. This the kind of message need to send to Hun Sen's government officials. People should not still depend on Hun Sen's corrupted court and judiciary system to resolve their issues. It will not!

If the three were to be Youn I can bet that the police would shoot villagers.

Dear bloggers, this is indeed a pictures from our motherland. Yes, we might call these people bandits or robbers back to the middle age period. One of our bloggers question -- this shouldn't be happen in the 21st century! I agreed with you, but this pure human insting. Which give me much worry about Cambodian condition. This just show the Cambodian lack the law to protect all people. One can ask anybody walk on the street...how does the law work? It only work for those that have money. In addition, if you happen to be the sons and daughters, you can drive an kill any Khmer on the street, and the law become blind (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil) to these so call elite and the rulling class...does in this case, how one expect the people to have conchent, while the leaders, and the ruller have no conchent at all. They are entile to robb the country and have the millitary and to police to protect them?....call for millitary belong, police and court to people independent and to serve the Cambodian people, not the interest group of elite!!!!!!

Cambodian people the dark side of themselves and what they are capable off...

Anonymous said...

it is sign of desperation. It all bottled up because they cannot do anything to the powerful and rich. How can the gov.t not seriously working to curb these kind of violent acts? It is creating a society that no one is safe.

Hun Sen and his clans have been robbing Cambodian for years. It's time to show Hun Sen street justice while we still have a country calls Cambodia.

Anonymous said...

sadly, some of these stupid villagers may already have or will be in the same situation as the three robbers because of their poverty and violent and lawless behavior.

A motorcycle is not worth three lives!!! To the disturbed people who cheered this kind of things, you better not go to Cambodia and upset some village mobs because if you did, they might just scream "robber" and your fate would be sealed.

It started with the leadership - violent threats and actions to intimidate weaker people (by lawsuits or by military police use) and the obvious disrespect of laws while impunity is the norm.

Anonymous said...

that does not paint a good picture of Cambodia to the world. No one should have any comfort knowing that these people (about a few hudreds of them???) could turn quite brutal. only the two women who got robbed and beaten.

the lesson to the other robbers is to kill their victims, and the police, and the angry villagers at any cost first to stay alive.

just because these stupid mobs killed these two or three it will never mean that Cambodia is rid of poor and desperate unemployed people who last resort to get something is through stealing and robbing.

anyway, have you seen Jea Xophara fortified cluster of mansions? how about Jom Brasidh's seaside mansion? disgusting.

Anonymous said...

Well the reason the villagers took the matter into their own hands because the authorities in all field are so corrupted. But I still not like how in these day that Cambodian still acting very cruel and very uncivilized and barbaric to one other.

Anonymous said...

Next steps, the villagers, the poor and honest and innocent people will kill the three thieves/robbers seen on the covertable car or bill board around the country. That would be really cool to see their blood.

Anonymous said...

The Cambodian people are fed up with the corruption that is so rampant with the CPP-controlled government, its corrupt provincial governors, judicial courts, high ranking police and military generals.

The Cambodian people are tired of having their dignity and freedom being trampled. They no longer want to be disenfranchised....

As a result, the Cambodian people are taking the law into their own hands and rising up.

You will see more of this in the future.

Beware CPP....your days are numbered. Be prepared to see your loved ones' bodies floating on the Mekong.

Why are you stupid and why is the court incompetent? Because as you wrote it yourselves, these are stakes on farmer's rice paddies - Not on international border.

So it show the the court is incompetent by sending to jail the rice farmers who had stakes forced on their farms.

Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! Sometime people should just read their quotes before the post.

dear all,
This is the only way how to deal with thieves in Khmerland nowaday. There are a few enforcements factors that make people taking jungle by their own hands.

1- They are poor and desperate people
2- They can't relize on corupted autority.
3- This mean is more efficiencier then punishment by Cambodian today LAW.
4- This mean the survivors SCARE to death for lives, some do so in front of the people. To put them in jail term, soon after freedom, the same thieves will committe crime again and again.

This is the way to punish all thieves who are commited crim, any nation !

Hi all blogers above !!!
It is sad to see some thing like this. But, please don't try to put down Cambodian society. We are all human, the black, white, yellow, brown, are all the same.
Thing like this happens every day around the world, it is just not on the news.
Don't forget that it Happened in the US too. Do you remember the riot in California ????? Rodney King ???? The white truck driver got beat up on the street ????
Forget about education, it has nothing to do with human action. Do you remember the Lady professor (PHD) who gunned down her three colleages in the University recently ?????? The reason was they gave her a bad review, what do you think about that ??????
Another example is Tibet riot. There were a lots of pictures of death people on the street, killed or beaten by the Chinese security forces.
If you never been robbed by the gun point, you don't how it feel like. I do not believe that it is just happened one in the area (Rbbery). It may happened many time before but the villagers could not find them. You cannot call them thieves. I rather call them gangster because they are a group of people with guns. It is better to describe them.
I take this picture one thing only, it show to the criminal that the crime don't pay.

i agree with 7:19am for pointing out other scenerio from all over the world. it is wrong to assume that this kind of mobbing is only happening in cambodia while other nation would block this kind of scene from the media. and who to say that cambodia has no freedom? if there is no freedom, then we would see this grotesque scene being shown here, really! blame no one, it's people's nature to fight back, that's why the rule of law is important because without it, people will resort to the stone age way or dark age way like this. why have law? because it protect people and reassures them of justice. of course, villagers shouldn't have done this, and gangsters shouldn't rob people. no excuses in the world can justify either side for doing what they did. you have to understand that every people are individual; and if they committed crime amongst angried or under educated villagers, you'll see this kind of mobbing. we should not condone either one of this whether the villagers or the gangsters . remember, even the police were afraid of the mobbing. so, don't blame the police for not using the weapons to calm everyone down. i think the police was doing their job, however, the unruly crowd seemed to get out of hand so even police with weapon yielded to them. so, stop saying gov't and authority use force because this showed the opposite i.e. the police did not use force on the people. anyway, it's called mobbing, and it is uncontrollable; people take the law into their own hands.

This is wrong! In Aust, we have a law to protect everyone equally, even for thieves and if a case like this happened in Aust, the whole nation would condemn the management of the police force (questioning the Minister for poor management) that is why Police usually have a "Ute" as to once they caught the thieves straight away they locked them up in the Ute to protect them from being beaten by the mob. What a waste of young lives. Again these thieves could have rehabilitated, like teach them or help them to learn to live a decent lives just like good people do because no one is perfect and we all know that people can change. Sometimes, there are lack of education about morality that is knowing what is right or wrong and that is why we demand to have the laws in place to protect everyone equally. Again, you can find material things but you can not find a precious life. Jesus once said "who without sin cast the first stone" and no one did, because no one is perfect. Aust

THis is just so wrong! These thieves would of received jail time and they would of had to serve it, because they are not rich and powerful. Remember the only ones who receive any sort of impunity would be the rich and powerful. I understand that the villagers are angry at the thieves, but they did not have to do that to them. They didn't kill anyone, they were trying to rob, because they are so poor and desperate for money. This is no excuse for their act, but they did not deserve this at all.
I agree with some of the statements made by some of the people here, channel this anger and violence at the land-grabbing thieves (CPP officials and blood sucking tycoons)

10:62 PM,

You said that Khmer people cannot win the law? Are you living in Cambodia right now? Do you know what side the law is on? The law is on the side of the elite (to protect those elite), and the law is on the side of the people that have money. Money speak justic for the rich in Cambodia. For the poor, there is no law on their side. So what the poor have, they have sticks, stones, their pain, suffering, opression and anger as their weapon to defend these thief.

In addition, why are you so concern with pitty cream like this, this is nothing compare to thief of selling Cambodia and Cambodian people (prostition to in the name of development of tourism, work abroad, marriage with foreigners)....there problems is like cancer which is need to be taken care off...Khmer waik up...before the KR regime come back again...because it is easy to recruit the poor and training them to be a killers(well, just like some of Hun sen body gards right now - they could kill you for entertainment...). This is the result of injustic in society. People have no trust for Cambodians justice system. The current government breeding incrimals. Some of the poor resort to criminal behavior for surviving while the powerful and the riches continue their criminal behavior with impunity...and it is so sad to see Cambodia is full of these kind of people...

why? maybe outdated mentality? maybe ignorance? maybe greed? do we know the truth? remember what the wised ones taught us, violence does not solve violence. only the rule of law rules, really! it is a lesson in life, isn't it! wake up people!

I can see khmer are not afraid to kill at all, it's scary..and they can only brave to attack their own blood. Please remove, we have seen enough. Thanks

I'm extreamely sad after seeing such news. I pray for the deaths. They are just suspects, we are not yet sure if they were involved. Again, stupid police should have protect them & let The law deal with it. Villagers are mostly uneducated, they are easily out of control. Those villagers that killed the two suspect should be served in jail for the killing. If Khmer people doesn't change this attitude, more and more violence will escalated. What ever it is, they aren't deserve to die but jailed! Please remove this picture, it is seen enough.

It is difficult sometimes to blame the villagers who are always living in fear bz of these bandits and no one used to help and solves the problems for them. Think of why do villagers behave like this??? because they don't believe, trust, and value the proposed alternatives and messy laws...and don't believe also the one who always just stay at homes, write comments in English, and do nothing...yab!!! everyone should take some effective actions to improve the situation!
