Cambodia’s best-known celebrity is actor and singer Preap Sovath. Immensely popular in his home country, Sovath has a talent for keeping his audience interested. Above all, he's a singer, but few will doubt his talent on the big screen.
Appearing in everything from music videos, to film, Sovath's exploits in 2007 earned him the top honour at the Cambodian Film Festival. For Sovath, the biggest challenge was not simply becoming a celebrity, but remaining one - he confided to RFI.
In Cambodia, new stars appear every day: They are born at nightfall and then disappear as soon as the sun rises, making way for those to come the night after. It’s rare for an actor to survive longer than three years. As a result, they tend to adopt a similar, rigid, style and find it difficult to adapt to the tastes of the public.
Sovath, to the contrary, knew how to conserve his popularity. He’s been the country’s highest-billed star for almost 20 years. It all started when he began singing in 1990, at a time when Cambodian cinema was not yet developed.
Apart from foreign films, karaoke music clips were all the graced screens in Cambodia. Sovath, a singer but also a talented actor, quickly joined Hang Meas, the biggest producer of music video clips in Cambodia.
Year after year, Sovath knew how to evolve along with the changing tastes of his fans. He did not hesitate to reinvent the style of his songs, nor the way he sang them. Moreover, he sang everything (from rock and pop to Khmer folk) and ensured everyone could see themselves in these clips – the young, the less young, the townsmen and the countrymen.
It was in 2005 when Sovath decided to dedicate himself to the big screen. He rediscovered himself in the film The Crocodile Hunter, playing nothing less that the hero. It was his film debut – but it was also his greatest cinematic success.
Today in Cambodia, the film market is in decline, largely because intellectual property rights are not respected: from the date of their release, and sometimes even before, films are copied and sold at an unbeatable price. As a result, cinemas are closing one after another and the producers are profiting less and less.
At 35 years of age, a married father of three, Sovath is continuing on his journey, all the while enchanting his public.
His success is not just thanks to his voice and acting prowess, but also to the manner in which he manages his private life. A stable and solid married life is paramount in a traditionally conservative society such as Cambodia's.
While most Cambodian celebrities are often tainted by sex scandals, Sovath is known to be a family man.
For his part, Sorvath hopes to continue his career along the same trajectory – at least for now. “I love art - and I love my career my as an artist, as it has allowed me step out of the void and become a celebrity.”

If you have chance to leave Cambodia, you better leave now. You don't want to see yourself happens like Touch Sunich.
Soon or later, you can't sing a song that you want to sing. It will be a song control by CPP. If you being stuburn you will be like Touch Sunich.
leave Cambodia and do what? Beg for factory jobs in the U.S?
If you have talent and success in Cambodia, you should stay and influence the other people with your wealth for positive change.
If everyone is a coward like you, running away at first sight of success, then Cambodians never succeed enough to make the nation prosperous. We will just leave it to the evil and corrupt people.
Shame on you for telling Cambodians to run away from their country.
I told him to leave cause I don't want to see Khmer artists getting kill. Can you look back and see how many our artists got killed??

When a Khmer leaves his/her country, a viet will replace him/her.
Would you leave your country, if given a chance to do so ?
talented or not khmer singer not gonna be and celibrity like other countries. their fan buy anything from them in illegal copy, since cambodia never or ignore copyright protection law.
The downfall not due to his act or actor. The downfall is due to his songs are stink, he's imitating from other and especially from Thai song. Most of the time you don't know if you singing or screaming..... what a disgrace singer unlike my man Sin Samot, that's call the real singer with meaning.
None of the Khmer in USA welcome him!!!! you right the guy is stink....he's not singing he's screaming his ass off.
Preap Sovath is still much better than Ah Palangkas sapoun midada.
fuck the usa I want to go back to my home town cambodia
Thank goodness, there are still oldie songs from Sisamot, Sarie-sothea, Huoy Meas, Pen Ron, and many other true and talent singers from the golden days available everywhere. Today only a few are considered decent singers-artists. The rests are bearable to listen to and to watch. They are that aweful. The lyric and song as a whole are garbage. This Sopheap is no exception.
up above i meant to Preap Sovath not Sopheap. See even his name i dont care to remember. the guy is aweful.
Dude suck big time. Can't sing fo shit. Do a talent show and actually welcome rich or poor to sing and you will find someone as good as the oldies. All these singer started out with connection higher up or just pull their dress up. Sad but true. Everyone got to make a living.
I'm an oldtimer and I missed Sin Sisamut and Mao Sareth.
Why people listening to Ah Thmat Sovath's Song...Somleng duch Throat cancer?? All he does sreaming and yelling like...Kdean Arch Chus minh Cheng aiengCheoung?
To: 6:52 AM
Even I am a palangkas but I am still better than you. It's mean you cannot do what I can but I can do what you can.
Ches eng oy kreng ches ker
Sapoun Midada
Dude has a good voice. He doesn't hold back making his singing sound natural. The only thing unnatural is his style of raising his voice at certain point. His diehard fans probably like it but to me this ruins the whole song. Of course, he has to define his own style but not in this unnatural way.
Piece of advice Sovath if you happen to come on here. Sing normally and you may win more fans. Forget about the diehards, they will always remain fans no matter what.
Who the heck is palangkas Sapoun Midada ?
Sapoun Midada
9:44 am
Good for you.
But,I don't eat left over like you.
mi dada dodo, you may have a handful of fan but to the millions of public, you are nothing. You are just a butterfly. I bet you don't even know what that means. So please.....
Are you saying midada goes the way of the dodo?
First I listen to his songs and doubt that he is not a good singer. But, I listen closely; he has a unique voice. He is not a very bad singer among the Khmer male singers.
I learn to like him. Don't run away from your country as some people suggest. Coming to America is not a heaven. We're safe in America, but we work very hard for the money. America is the best country in the world. It's capitalist, but work harder than Communist or Socialist as China, Vietnam, France etc...
If you have money in America, you can have anything you want without fear of Hun Sen coming after your wealth.
Keep up your work, Preap Sovath.
Just don't abuse your power to your servants and poor people. Treat them equal. We're all under Khmer Rouge regime and we should learn from the past.
I didn't like Preap Sovath at first then I started to listen more and more of his song suddenly I found myself hook to them many of them are actually beautifully delivered.
Khmer customer is not giving much weight to artists which is really unfortunate because they are the one that continue to deliver the legacy of Khmerness, if you don't like it it's your prerogative but steer clear of bad mouthing them. They did nothing wrong compared the the Govt. clan.
Peace to all of them I am a fan and supportive of their love for the art.
Amen to 12:15 pm. Well said...if you don't like him(Sovath) then move on to the next one. Don't be a sore loser or hater fool. Your ass ain't no better than him.
you two dumbo's sure dont know the differance. a public figure such as singers, movie stars, and policians are subjected critesism and praise by the public. you want a lime light, be ready for some hash words. morons!
1:35 PM Do not know who is moronic here, criticism is a healthy sign of democracy and critics also have ethic too but lambasting people don't and you certainly fall into that category I am afraid.
Preap Sovath is our very own true Heavy Metal artist. We just don't know it. There is absolutely no doubt about it that the possibility is also endless in this incredible talented artist.
Sophorn Midada is much softer. His attempt to show a sweeter and gentler side of a man is there and believable. If you in love, there he is.
We certainly are very fortunate to have these two most talented men. God bless Cambodia!
Ordinary Khmer
Oops..If you're in love, there he is.
OK
I hope you don't want to be PM :)
I love both of them :-) at least
Every artist compiled a unique style of lyric. Sovath and Midada is unique in their own way. Yet, some dumbass in here lambasting them like he/she can do better. Most of you here still stock with "oldies but goody." There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But, these new generation of singer's deserved a little respect if any. Bottom line is....it's today's Rock & Rolls!
To Ordinary Khmer,
some of these dumbass can't appreciate the fact that these talented artist are the next generations of our music.
When Preap Sovoth came to Lowell Ma, about 2 or 3 years ago, he wasn't polite at all. The girls audience tried to touch him but he turned away. OH! he was awful when he sang live. I thought he was ugly, rude and people in U.S don't want to welcome him anymore. Mr. Preap can act rude to his own people. Khmer in U.S don't need this kind of attitude. I hope people stop buying his cds. BTW, he copied a lot of songs from other countries. I hope, he will be sued soon.
people...it's time to move on...give new singer a chance. preap sovath is one of a kind, infact he's one of the best male out there right now. he produce and sing more songs than many others. sinn sisamouth is always a great singer and a legend, but he is dead now...so move on...
Yes, Sin Sisamouth is dead, but his songs will live on forever in the hearts of all Khmers past, present and future generations.
8:28AM put urself in his shoes...would you be mad if girls touch you left and right during ur performance? he don't need all those female. srey in usa need to hold their horses and act more mature instead of being so ghetto.
9:48AM - we know, all of us know that, its been like this for over 30 years and will continuing. but he is dead--MOVE ON!!! :D
Btween sovath and midada
SOVATH!!!
sorry, Im not a big fan of midada. His voice is flat and always full of sorrow. The same with Meas Saly.
Panayarith is out the picture, his voice sounds more and more like a girl.
Also Sereymum is good too. Oh and James.
Go new talented artists, you guys are the next generations of our music!!!

well sovath is not the prettiest guys out there, but he is not the ugliest either.
My five years old nephew loves Preap Sovath. How did that happen?:)Well, just want to tell you that Sovath, you just got yourself a real fan!and he is on what? which means for the next 25 -30 years and perhaps for the rest of his life, he'll remember you. Fabulous job dude and keep it up!
I think that all of the people who are criticizing Preap Sovath have not truly listened to his songs, because if they did, they would realize that he has a powerful and unique voice. His talent is remarkable and his range is very impressive.
I can understand that they don't like the "screaming" parts in his songs, but he is capable of much more than that. When he sings the more traditional songs, his vocals are so soothing and so emotionally-intense. (For example, in the song "Kloy Snae Tnout Te") It's really incredible. I salute Mr. Preap Sovath for having such an amazing gift.
Also, when he came to Canada a few years ago, my cousin spotted him having lunch at a restaurant and she went up to say hello... he told her and her friends to sit down and have lunch with him and his crew, and he paid for their lunch. She said he was extremely nice and polite. I have the picture in my house!
He's a good guy and I am happy for him. Like it or not, he is one of our national symbols and we should be proud of him! I know I am.
Preap Sovath is dubbed the Asian Michael Buble
