“We are sorry that this man who was formerly a monk did something repulsive to Cambodian society.”Peeping-tom footage allegedly taken by an unscrupulous Buddhist monk is spreading across the county via cell phones in a widening phenomenon authorities are trying to curb.
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Information made a public appeal to stop the spread of the videos, which depict women showering in a Phnom Penh pagoda.
The images were allegedly secretly taken by Neth Kai, a 35-year-old monk at Srah Chak pagoda. He was arrested June 26, following a police investigation prompted by a victim’s complaint.
Neth Kai has been defrocked and charged with producing and distributing pornography, which carries a jail sentence of up to a year.
Officials now say the images he took are moving from person to person via their cell phones and Bluetooth technology.
“The sharing of naked women [images] through technological equipment from one person to another continues,” Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith said. “However, there is an absolute prohibition from authorities.”
Khieu Kanharith urged the promotion of good acts by Cambodians to counter the alleged “bad act of the former Buddhist monk.”
In a statement, the Ministry of Information asks people to stop sharing and to erase the offending images, “to join in the promotion of the honor of the Cambodian women and our national prestige and to avoid being looked down on by foreigners.”
Ros Sopheap, director of the organization Gender and Development for Cambodia, said the distribution of the images could affect efforts to promote women’s rights and to prevent domestic violence.
Supreme Patriarch Non Nget criticized the former monk for his alleged behavior, but he was quick to add that it was not a reflection of monks in general.
“We are sorry that this man who was formerly a monk did something repulsive to Cambodian society,” he said.

a lot of comments reflects an ignorance and misunderstanding by many people who believed that Buddhism has been too static and is the source of the problem. They played on this ignorance probably intentionally to provide excuses for immoral irresponsibility and breach of trust by monks.
They argue that Buddhism keep monks as prisoners and does not allow them freedom to make money, make pleasure, and enjoy worldliness.
This arguments reflects a deep misunderstanding and ignorance of the teachings of Buddha.
Monkhood is a free-will, a choice undertaken by men who wants to follow the merit making and renunciation path of the Buddha.
All monks are freed to leave the path if they felt that their life would benefit more in this world from a worldly experience.
Those who chose to stay, are not put under any responsibility by society, but it is they themselves who has accepted the responsibility to lead virtuous life that ensures trust, honor, and reverence by people in the community and protections of all beings.

The practice of using sacred water itself should not be promoted in Buddhist pagoda. There have been many scandals through this kind of animist practice. The ministry of Culture and Monk Leaders should take action to prevent the abuse in the future.

We must recgnize that there bad peopele in any religion, Buddhism, Muslim, Judaism,and Christianism. But ther are not the Majórity.

Many Wats in Cambodia are giving service like Sacred Water, Yon Protection and so on. It is a corrupt way of practicing Buddhism, but Venerable Nuon Gnet and other top leaders allow it to carry out through out the country. If I remember well, Samdach Chuon Nat, in many speech, spoke against this kind of cult. The most famous Wats near Phnom Penh like Wat Cham Pous Ka-ek, San Sam Ko Sal etc. should be investigated too. And the corrupt practice should be banned.

2:02, authority is not vacating anybody except the monk. The monk's father or uncle that was in charged of the temple also resigned. So no one except those whose's reputation had been damaged was removed or voluntarily left.
