Cambodia wants UN chief to mediate with Thailand

Cambodia's prime minister said Thursday he will ask United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to help mediate talks he is proposing to help settle a border dispute with neighboring Thailand.

Speaking to government officials in the capital Phnom Penh, Hun Sen said he will raise the issue with Ban during the U.N chief's official visit to Cambodia on Oct. 27-28.

Thailand and Cambodia both claim a 1.8-square-mile (4.6-square-kilometer) patch of land near the cliff-top Preah Vihear temple. Hun Sen on Monday proposed an international conference to discuss the dispute "because the bilateral discussion is at an impasse now."

"We will request the United Nations Secretary-General to be the coordinator," Hun Sen said Thursday.

Thailand opposes the idea as unnecessary because a 2000 agreement between the two countries provides the framework for a solution.

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Tuesday accused Cambodia of causing the current problem by moving people onto the disputed land. Both countries have a heavy troop presence in the area and have had several small but sometimes deadly clashes in the past few years.

The International Court of Justice in 1962 ruled that the 11th century temple belongs to Phnom Penh.

UNESCO named it a World Heritage site in 2008 after Cambodia applied for the status. The country submitted a management plan for the temple recently to UNESCO's World Heritage Commission, which deferred a decision until next year.

Abhisit is under pressure to move aggressively because Thai right-wing nationalists have protested that Cambodian actions there threaten Thailand's sovereignty.

Domestic political pressure limits Abhisit's ability to make compromises, while Hun Sen -who runs Cambodia with an iron hand - can act without much fear of criticism, and seems to enjoy taunting his Thai counterpart. His antagonism toward Abhisit's government may be ascribed to the Thai leader appointing as his foreign minister Kasit Piromya, who before taking the post had insulted Hun Sen in public speeches as a gangster and a bum.

Siem knows that if we have a third party in...they will lose!

A third party mediator is a must...there is no need to play cat and mouse game with Siem thief.

If Khmers are not still stupid and dump anymore, we will have some lands for our children, grandchildre, a place to live. Not living under anyone's control.

cambodia's dealing with siem childish game is useless and a waste of cambodia's time. yes, use the UN to get things moving with the law. siem kept using a different map from us, so it's not going to solve anything. it must be an internationally recognized map or we can't accept it when it comes to demarcation with our neighboring countries. the problem is easy if everybody cooperates in accordance to the law, really! yes, the internatinal law because we are dealing with international boundary, you know!

A few months ago Hun Sen wants to kick UN out of Cambodia for involving its human right issue. Calling the UN should not be meddling with Cambodia’s domestic problems. Now he wants UN help to resolve the conflict with Thailand. Hun Sen will gladly see the UN this time and not pretend sick

It's the first time the Khmers show some initiative in dealing with the THUGS Ah-Siems. But why wait until October 27-28 to talk to the UN Ban Ki Moon ?

10:51pm, every case is different. UN don't think like you, really! they only use the law, not emotion like siem pad thugs and you. UN can help to difference a real difference in cambodia, despite all going on in cambodia. hey, every case is different. wake up and be educated already, please!

it's not they wait. UN has millions of tasks to do, they have to prioritized which is more urgent or important, etc... be educated. and don't just complain without knowing how the UN works, etc..., ok!

If Thai people smart, they would understand Gov. position on the issue.
The current Thai Gov. is not capable of solving the problem by itself and at the same time The Gov. do not want the third party to get involve because they are afraid they will loose !!!!!
Thailand have so many lawyers and educated people, but the PM talked like a little kid !!!!
How hard is it just to review the document ? You know that you can't just go around and saying that you are right !!! Show your evidence !!

All Khmers,

Why Thai had done this to Cambodia?

Because Hun Sen let Hanoi encraoched FREELY on EASTERN KHMER BORDERS. And Hun Sen had emprisonned Khmer citizen, the owners of the LANDS ENCRAOCHED BY VIETNAM.

Thai knew this Hun Sen's WEAK POINT
as a lackey of Vietnam. And without the APPROVAL FROM HANOI, Hun Sen will never bring this Preah Vihear's Case to UN at all.
Otherwise it will backlash to Hanoi's encraochment on khmer eastern borders by thousands square kilometers.

This the real root cause of this case.

The MULTILATERAL Involvement only can solve this matter.

Thai wants a piece of Khmre PIE too.
If Yuon Can do it, then Thailand and Laos can do that too.

I hope US support Thailand to Invade Cambodia and change authoritarian leadership of Cambodia. So Cambodian will have democracy and self-determination.

Use all the Air superiority to control the air space, and use all M1A1 and M1A2, Armored to crush the command posts and fast advance to Battambang and Siemreap within an hour.

Hun Sen's Army will lose, because they are poor and not enough salary, low living condition, foods and weapons.

There is no such a thing as a 4.6 sq km territory dispute before Cambodia Preah Vihear listed as world heritage. This piece of land has always been Cambodia's; and it is in Cambodia territory according to the map deposit in United Nation. Thailand disputes is based on their own unilateral drawing map that no recognized. To put simply, Thailand is the sore loser and they would undermine Cambodia every shape or form out of jealousy and empiricism pretty much. Because of the sensitive issue of Preah Vihear, the Abhishit Thai government exploits the opportunity inflaming their nationalist group of PAD THAI to go extremist against Cambodia's advancing in the UNESCO.

Cambodia is wishing a third party to see for itself and to resolve the issue once and for all. Cambodia do not wish to have anything to do with Thailand as we have learned so many lesson already that Thailand never respect Cambodia...

Mr. 1:24 AM,

If Thailand/US invade Cambodia, millions of innocence life will be killed again. Khmer has suffered enough to have another killing field. So please...please use diplomacy instead of WAR!

Cambodia should not be playing this bullshit game with thailand. IT is time for the next step which is to settle this matter with mr. abishit in the battlefield. Someone once said, "those who do not learn from history are doom to repeat it" Throughout history thailand has egregiously attempted to manipulate the border demarcation between cambodia and thailand. Cambodia has had enough of this bullshit political game. Let's fight!
