FM Secretary: Thai diplomats in Phnom Penh to meet 3 Thai detainees

BANGKOK, Aug 23 (MCOT online news) - Thai diplomats in Phnom Penh will meet three Thai detainees on Thursday and will seek their release after they are charged with illegal entry into the neighbouring country and with firearms possession, Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, a secretary to Thai foreign minister said Monday.

The diplomats expect to meet the trio August 26 but they are discussing with the Cambodian interior ministry to meet them sooner if possible as they have been detained for over a week.

The Thai diplomats will explain to Cambodia to confirm that the trio are local residents who were collecting forest products along the Thai-Cambodian border in Thailand's northeastern province of Surin and they straggled into Cambodian territory. They had no intention to spy nor any political motives.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is trying to do everything it can to prevent the trio from being prosecuted. There is still hope. However, the case is proceeding according to the actions of the Cambodian prosecutors. We hope we will finish the processes (to help them) before indictment,” he said.

Surin governor Rapee Phongbuphakij said the three villagers— Sanong Wongcharoen, Lim Puangpet and Lan Sapsri-- are natives of Surin.

Senior Thai officials have said the trio are not spies and that their arrest has nothing to do with the ongoing border dispute between the two nations.

Mr Rapee said he had talked by telephone to the three men now jailed in Siem Reap, and they had asked for the Thai government's assistance in securing their release.

They complained of hardships while in prison, the governor said, noting that he had ordered officials who would negotiate with the Cambodian officials to also give clothing and medicines to the detainees.

Those detainees are Khmer STIENG or Khmer KUOY, most of Thais in most of Thailand est-provinces are Khmers, specifically living at the border, they were very good with Khmer refugees from 1975 to 1980, please, release them.
