A CAMBODIAN man who overstayed his visitors' visa escaped custody while on an excursion to a bowling alley.

He and another detainee were visiting the alley at a nearby shopping centre on Saturday with two staff when he fled.

The man, who has been held at the Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre since January, remains on the run.

The 80-bed centre is run by Serco, a private security firm that receives about $70 million a year to run the nation's detention centres.

A Department of Immigration and Citizenship spokeswoman said the man escaped on Saturday morning.

"The man, who is originally from Cambodia and another client were being escorted by two detention service provider officers when the man ran off,'' the spokeswoman said.

"Extra Serco staff were immediately called to the scene, but the man was unable to be relocated.''

Police were notified about the escape.

It is believed the escape was captured on CCTV.

The Department has called for a report into the incident from Serco.

People have right to live by legal way , overstayed on tourist visa ? If you are Australian what do you feel ? You just feel slap in the face . If you asked for visitor visa you should comply with your application form , If you abuse your visa mean you are illegal civilian . Australia not like US , even he overstayed for 10 years or 20 years when he get caught he will send back to Cambodia . If I were him I won't run away I just go back and find legal way to come back if I really wanna live here .

Having a lot of Asian travelers to visit this country, the problems come up.If the problems appear, each country must use the laws.We have to obey the laws, but Australia should treat travelers well including Khmer traveler or visitor to this country.
