Cambodia rejects Thai tender of road funds

CAMBODIAN officials said yesterday that they would reject US$41.2 million in funding for a road project that Thailand reportedly pledged to resume last week as part of an effort to warm relations between the two countries.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Koy Kuong said Cambodia would not accept the loan, as it had already financed the road project independently.

“We have not requested this loan, and we don’t need this money,” Koy Kuong said. “We are using our own budget to construct this road and the project is well under way.”

Koy Kuong’s comments yesterday marked a change in tone from his remarks on the Thai loans the previous day; when asked about the subject on Sunday, he said Cambodia “welcomes all forms of donations without conditions attached”.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaungsuban said last week that the aid, originally promised last August to extend National Road 68 up to the Thai border in Oddar Meanchey province, would be resumed in view of the countries now-normalised diplomatic relations, the Bangkok Post reported.

In November, Prime Minister Hun Sen ordered the cancellation of all Thai grants and loans in the diplomatic spat that ensued following Cambodia’s now-terminated appointment of fugitive former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as an economics adviser.

Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs deputy spokesman Thani Thongphakdi said yesterday that he was unaware of Cambodia’s position on the funding, but that Thailand “stands ready to promote further bilateral cooperation with Cambodia”.

i don't blame the gov't for reject siem's money because there seemed to be too quick for siem to change their mind like that. maybe siem try to use this money as a way to buy cambodia's bilateral trade, etc. the more siem waited the more khmer question them. of course, no string attached is better for cambodia as cambodia does not want to brag and manipulate the situation with cambodia.

I do not like Thai and Vietnam, both of them are greedy that they want to eat Khmer alive. Now Khmer is in Vietnam dragon tummy already.Thai is willing to make business, fooling around, sneaking around. Thai has a tricky attitude.

In addition, we must concentrate on rule of law, because only rule of law can take Cambodia into another level of expectation. Rule of law helps us to walk, drive and navigate according to plans like a sailor needs his Compass while at the High Sea. Only rule of law can truely change Cambodia into the directions everyone wants. Look at Thailand for example, they know what they. In 1915, Siam decided to follow the West and thus they have chosen America and British as their Compass and guidance. The King and I should have explained that better than anything that has ever written for all Siamese. Once the Siamese have decided on what they want they will never look back, and we can see the result of the present time...they have outgrew Cambodia when it comes to success and being established. Having said that, Cambodia ought to do the same thing. As a nation, we must pick a model, the best model there is in the world t use it as guidance and compassing our hardest time and made it to a greater and better place for all. In the end...no one is stopping us from growing, but ourselves. Democracy is there for us to grasp, rule of law is there for us to be written, models are there for us to follow. The question is...when will we say enough is enough and this is the time to rise up to the challenges. WE CAN DO IT. NO MORE EXCUSES.

I thank you.

I support that idea. I am not a CPP supporter but just want to tell thai government that cambodian can live without your help.

All friends!

Any form of loan is always accrued in interests, subsequently cambodians are loaded with that on top of their misery of poverty.

So, any sweet talk about this should be avoided. Avoid both from Cambodia's neighbours, vietnam and Thailand.
If we do need loan for infrastructure, we should stick to China.Be reminded that cambodian government will end up paying back through our natural resources.
To reduce massive destruction on our resources, technology on agriculture is to improve where abundant market available.
Be smart to make money rather than waiting to swallow the money and keep them for your comfort.
And laws and order should be a fair practice,it should not be in the hand of the rich and powerful.
It proves that RGC has to improve its management,to consolidate and protect Cambodia and her people.

Cheating is NO longer viable under the eyes of social organisations and international communities.

Best and luck for our reconstruction!.
