PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- The Cambodian army is to shortly begin a live-fire exercise in Phnom Srouch district of Kampong Speu province.
Concerned about the possibility of inadvertent civilian casualties, the commander in chief of the Cambodian armed forces, Tea Banh, appealed to the provincial governor and local authorities in Phnom Srouch district to disseminate information among the people living near the area of the training exercise, Rasmei Kampuchea newspaper reported Friday.
Cambodian deputy commander in chief and the Supreme Command's training department commander also appealed to local authorities to inform the citizenry during a recent inspection of the exercise's location.
The Cambodian armed forces are becoming increasingly armed with more sophisticated weaponry. At another live-fire exercise last January, troops deployed BM-21 multiple rocket launchers along with T55 and T54 tanks.
For most Cambodians of more immediate concern are the more than 2 million land mines estimated to be still littering the countryside after nearly three decades of strife.

Live firing drill is good, what is more important is how to instill the idea that the Khmer Army do not belong to any political party. In other words the Khmer Army must be neutral and its sole purpose is to serve the Khmer Nation.
The military exerise and new weapon should be enlargement and advancement, but we want peace and security in our society. We dont want other nations insult our country by threathen. The Military should be strong and strong both human resource and materials. I dont want to see internal fighting any more because we have long experience and people were killed by internal issue. We are all the blood of Cambodian, please dont weapon to fight. Now we turned to fight by speaking and criticise for advancement society. Please all khmer melt into one soul even though we have different direction both ideas and policy issue. I dont want the blood of poeple cover the earth by fighting each other. Please stop doing suffer things for mild people and we together build the modern society. On the other hand we absolutely protect our country from agression other countries. Even we peace, but military should be strong. I dont mind if government increase budget for military, but i want all military should deploy around the border in three neighbor country and at least protect our people, our land, and criminal issues. We dont wait other abuses and then protect.
