The US on Tuesday deported five men to Cambodia, with another 25 expected to follow, a senior diplomat said.
The deportations are the result of an immigration law that sends convicted felons back to their home countries. The US has expelled more than 200 Cambodians under the law since 2001, when Cambodia signed an agreement to take back deportees.
However, many of them had never been to Cambodia and had grown up as children of immigrants from the Khmer Rouge era.
The five men—Kol Ly Hov, Mem Meanrith, Kong Chantha, Kim Thet and Sim Loeurt—left by special plane and are expected to arrive in Cambodia by Sept. 2, Cambodia's ambassador to the US, Hem Heng, told VOA Khmer.
“They came to a developed country and should not have committed criminal acts or wrongdoing,” the ambassador said.
However, some development experts worry about the effects of deportation on men who have lived most of their lives in the US.
Some do not speak Khmer, or have no relatives or job opportunities when they arrive in Cambodia, said Kloeung Aun, executive director of the Returnee Integration Support Center, which is based in Cambodia.
Deportees may know nothing of Cambodian culture and may be split from their families back home, he said.

Ah stupid Hem Keng mother fuckers. Cause of your stupid gov't sign the agreement with the U.S. that fucking why they deported them back. I knew that you stupid gov't wants the money from the U.S. gov't no body one to live in the communist country and also slave to ah Youn VietCong.
OK! think that you did bad to the community now you pay back as exemple for the youngster!
Goodluck!
These were niggers wannabes. They act like niggers, talk like niggers yet have penis much smaller than niggers' eventhough the brain size is about the same which is the size of a peanut. Good luck gangsters, hope you will find happiness in your old country.
They won't have much opportunity in Cambodia since they don't speak good Khmer and speak very shitty English. That's too bad. Even if opportunites were given to them, they won't put it in good use instead they turn to the dark side and committed all kind of crimes. Didn't even bother to apply for citizenship. These are stupid people and they deserve to die. Don't feel sorry for them, instead we should feel sorry for Cambodia to bring back such garbages which will do no good for the country.
Hi! Dude,
These motherfucker will be jailed in Cambodia. Bravo. I don't support those gangs back to the lovely country, they are going to destroy our culture and train a bad culture to the young generation living in Cambodia.
I suggest to the Cambodian government to put them in jail for 10-20 years to learn Khmer culture first and as well as khmer Language.
A comment from an stupid Khmer ambassador! Has no feeling for Khmer anywhere.
Khmer is such a beautiful country and people are very nice but the rulers are all idoits.
These are the left over from Khmer Rouge regime.
you'r all so mean!!!
5:19am human is a human not animal why you so mean to them ?
people can change from bad to good or from good to bad ,he commit
crime in US BUT HE SERVED already
he should live here .you look to vietnam gov. never take these people to his country why????
you can answer yourself, alot vietnamese commit crime in USA.
The Ambassador is right: They should not have come to a developed country and commit crime. They should have stayed in Cambodia and commit crime and they would have been made general of police, general of the Armed Forces, Member of Parliament etc. What has Ambassador Hem Heng ever done for Cambodia?
As for 4.47AM, you are the one with the brain of a monkey. I take that back, because I don't want to insult the monkeys! You managed to insult African Americans as well as fellow Khmers. I hope they find you and arrest you for racial hatred.
As for the others who have no mercy for these deported guys, remember this: what goes around comes around. Only those within sin should throw the first stone, my friends.
7:06 AM,
Don't worry! The Lord Jesus will take good care of them wherever they are. After all, they are also God's children.
Welcome to you new home! 5 less criminals for the US but more for Cambodia, DAMN DAMN!
"As for the others who have no mercy for these deported guys, remember this: what goes around comes around. Only those within sin should throw the first stone, my friends.
7:06 AM"(SIC)
you mean "Without" Yes I am with out sin! and if I have sin I will drow the stone if it good for the society!
The way you think world will never have laws and every one will corrupted and kiled eachother like animal!
Maybe Canada, Australia, New Zealand, England, etc.. should have the same deportation agreement with the Cambodian governments. You commit the crime, you get a one-way ticket home. That's fair and square.
Free ticket home, anybody???
Mr. Hem Heng,
Were you implying that the "developed" country should be free of wrongdoings or crimes? Why then there exist laws and courts? Should everyone in America be banished from the land if they committed crimes or wrongdoings??
The unfortunate thing is that these green card holders are easy targets for this law. It would be interesting to get the statistics on the rates of deportations between ex/criminals of different racial make-ups. Deporting these khmer permanent residents defeats the meaning of the meaning of the word "permanent" in these people's US residency status and will not reduce any crime rate in the US - many of these people had already served times and turned their lives around.
plus, if Mr. Hem Heng is correct, the CPP run RCG should deport all criminal yuons to Hanoi.
THE GOOD IS: they got their lessons learned. Their freedom is out of control. Try that freedom in Cambodia, they got their ass kicked in day one.
THE BAD IS: those doggies will probably terrorize and victimize the innocent Cambodian people inside Cambodia.
THE BETTER SOLUTION IS: Lock'em up here in the USA and never allow to see daylight again or kill them all here. They are bad guys anyway! they do nothing for the community. AM I RIGHT?
Trust me on that, those returnees could never be able to terrorize any Khmer in Cambodia - no one in Cambodia will be terrorized enough to ever kneel and beg for mercy while carrying these returnee's pictures!!!
mam meanrith came to united state on april 21st 1981. he resided in atlanta, georgia with his father, mother and his sisters. he is the third child of mam family. meanrith committed minor crime when he was teenager. he now left behind two daughters and a son. meanrith left cambodia in 1979 when vietnamese soldiers invaded cambodia. he does not know any extended family in cambodia. he does not reads or write cambodian language. he will be lost there.
in 1979 we walked to thai border searching for food and freedom. we didn't want to be in the danm communist regime anymore. it took us 3 night and 3 days to get to the border. we had found our freedom and now he goes back to hell alone.
why wasn't he sent home when he was making that mistake? why do they wait for him to produce two, three kids and then deside to send him away from his children?
mam malis.
mr. hem heng,
i never want to leave my country in the first place. do you remember cambodia in 1975 to 1979 how it was like? cambodia was a hell. was this my choice to leave my home? all the mother fucker leaders turned the country upside down. we all scattered all over the places because all the braindless leader.
9.00 AM,
Have you ever heard of the 'nit-picker's curse' ?
Mam Malis,
The bad thing about this US law is that it is retrospective.
Yea.. We also need to sent some lazy ass Khmer people back to Cambodia for labor camp. They dont know shit here in the USA. Alot of them are from Long Beach area and Mass state.
I am for deportation as long as the US law is willing to send white fold back to Europe and black folk back to Africa after they committed crimes. This is nothing more than Racism toward my Cambodian brothers who have served their times. We don't come to the US by choice, it was wars that was created by the US killing a lot innocent Khmer people. This law is so double standard and it should be applied to white folk too and for those of you that is laughing, you probably would feel other while if it happened to your family. My friends, laught while you can today, tomorrow it may be somebody else turn to laugh.
Khmer USA
SOME OF THESE PEOPLE BEING DEPORTED BACK DID NOT EVEN COMMIT SEVERE CRIMES OR IS A REPEAT OFFENDER. THE US GOV IS JUST PICKING UP CAMBODIANS WITH ANY TYPE OF CONVICTIONS AND SENDING THEM BACK. NOT ACKNOWLEDGING IF THIS PERSON HAS BEEN A GOOD CITIZEN SINCE HE/SHE HAS DONE HIS/HER TIME. I'M ALL FOR DEPORTATION BUT I FEEL THAT IT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED DIFFERENTLY, ITS NOT FAIR TO THE ONES WHO ACTUALLY CHANGED THERE LIVES AND WHY IS IT THAT CAMOBODIANS ARE BEING SENT BACK ... WHAT HAPPEN TO ALL THE OTHER RACES THAT COMMIT A CRIME? EVERY 1 WHO PUT THESE DEPORTEES DOWN DONT KNOW SHIT. YOU CAN TALK LIKE THAT ONLY BECAUSE YOUR NOT IN THEIR SHOES OR IS NOT THAT PERSONS FAMILY. SIT AND READ WHAT THESE PEOPLE ACTUALLY WERE CONVICTED FOR BEFORE YOU GO AND JUDGE ANY ONE.
Yes. It is not right my friends. Most of the people that are on the deportation list committed their crimes as a teenager. It is not fair that they get deported back even when their lessons are learned. Most of the people, like myself, have changed their lives around, started businesses and are graduates of universities. Should they deport people who is paying back to society and are supplying people with jobs when the economy sooo needs it right now. As you can see, my life is on a straight arrowed path. I am hoping to start a non-profit organization to help delinquent kids go back to college and complete their education with at least a bachelors degree. If all goes well and I am still here, this will happen. And to all the negative people out there that do not understand what green card holders are going through, you and your kids will and could also take this non-profit organization grant money for your schooling to better educate yourself so that you may know that the deportation law here is not fair to anyone.
