“The purpose of the trip to Cambodia is to develop and further the relationship between the United States and Cambodia...and it’s a special trip because the Mustin is commanded by a Cambodian-American.”
When the US naval ship USS Mustin docks in Cambodia next month, it will be a homecoming for the the destroyer's commander.

Michael Vannak Khem Misiewicz was adopted by an American woman in 1973, as Cambodia fell to the war and the oncoming Khmer Rouge. He was raised in the US and has not returned home in 37 years.

“The purpose of the trip to Cambodia is to develop and further the relationship between the United States and Cambodia...and it’s a special trip because the Mustin is commanded by a Cambodian-American,” Misiewicz told VOA Khmer by phone from aboard his ship. “We'll help train some of the Royal Cambodian Navy and military, and we're also going there to do community relations projects.”

The USS Mustin, based in Yokusuka, Japan, is a guided missile destroyer, carrying 300 sailors onboard. The December visit to Cambodia comes on the heels of a visit by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, this month.

“I know it's going to be very emotional,” said Misiewicz, who was born in Kandal province but was adopted by an American woman whom his aunt worked for.

Misiewicz, whose given name is Vannak Khem, went to school in the US, not knowing what became of his family after the Khmer Rouge came to power. He graduated high school, joined the US Navy, and later went on to the Naval Academy, earning his officer's commission in 1992.

When he returns to Cambodia, he will be reunited with his aunt. His father was executed by the Khmer Rouge in 1977, but his birth mother now lives in Texas with her family.

Be sure to teach the Khmer Cammanders not to beat their own people over there. Please be sure you gave a mesage to Khmer Cammander, Micheal, that army, police, army, navy are not use to fight their own people. Remember Khmer do not fight Khmer.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CAMBODIAN.

One of the best Khmer refugee in the USA turned into a US Navy Destroyer Commander. Forget about the Khmer refugee stereotype like the Long Beach Khmer gansters. We have the good and the bad ones as any other people on the planet.

I don't know how much Khmer left in him. I doubt it if this guy speaks Khmmer. Also,I do not believe he can be much of a role model for any Khmer. That said, the president of the US, for instance, the guy is black, and , at least in my opinion, is not much a model to the black community either--just like the commander (pictured).

Please talk to Hun Maneth and inspired him about soldier training, and ethical value of a real soldier.
I have a mix feeling whether the Hun are welcome you or despise you, especially the father and the sons.

The Naval Academy, Nautilus, is a great institution. This news make me so happy! Many of us Khmers are doctors, lawyers, officers but we rarely make the news. The one that grab the news are the gangsters, it's unfortunate. Then again, I would rather remain anonymous.

There is one more Cambodian born in US high ranking army officer, Major General Ted Doun Seth, Jeffrey, Jr., Who came as unaccompanied minor in 1963 age age 4, adopted by an American diplomat, after US and Sihanouk relationship went sour. His official commission will be retired by the end of 2016.

i think only in american and some EU countries like france, you can do this, despite your national origin. i think only a few countries on the planet have laws to let people from other national origin to serve in top influential position like this, given they are qualified, of course; these few countries are the USA, france, australia and new zealand, can maybe some more countries that i missed. god bless america and cambodia.

Anonymous said...

that's not the point, the point is that he was khmer origin, and he goes to show that khmer people aren't stupid and brain dead like our historical enemies, the siem and the youn label as lazy, stupid, barbaric, etc... it is the lack of opportunity, justice, etc, that deprived khmer people in cambodia. america proved to the world that an adopted cambodian like the commander here is a capable, smart, intelligent, etc when given the opportunity to he who he wanted to be, you see! it proves all the ignorant people biased and labeling of khmer people as stupid or less intelligent that they are, especially we know siem and youn said that about khmer people! siem and youn can go to hell, bitch!!!!

Folks! now we got cambodian navy and cambodian airforce blooming like wild mushroom...i think it's time to take our revenge!!

Cambodian born abroad knowing whose mostly are proudly reminded by parent, of their great empire prior Cambodia deteriorated among the poorest country in the world.

Give them a change eventhough they are enjoying lucky life in foreign country are so painful to see our poor children in Cambodia are not well being in teir life..
If they could share a bit to help their country please let it be..
A lot skillful Khmer doctors, Lawyers, professional Engineers, in Europe, Asia ....we does not how many out there but through friendly connection those elite will not want moneys and power in their country origin just want to help if time allowed but not in a unlawful country, dictathorship at this time.
