Is This A Great Country Or What?

The Navy's Pacific Fleet reports:

U.S. Navy Commander Michael Vannak Khem Misiewicz has visited dozens of ports over the course of his career, but none has ever evoked the emotions that will come when his ship USS Mustin visits Cambodia in December, marking the first time in 37 years that he has returned to the land of his birth.

As a young Cambodian boy born and living in the rice fields outside of the capital Phnom Penh in the late 1960's / early 1970's, Misiewicz – whose birth name was Vannak Khem -- wasn't aware of the political tension building up around him. When his country plunged into turmoil, his family reluctantly gave him up for adoption to a young American woman who worked at the U.S. Embassy, allowing him to escape before the Khmer Rouge regime took over the country, eventually causing millions of deaths in what is known as the “Killing Fields.”

“I know it's going to be very emotional,” said Misiewicz. “I was the lucky one in the family.”

Great achievement! This is by no mean like 'generals' or 'ek oudoms' that come by the dozens in a batch through corruption or cronyism.

Story like this cannot help, but makes one feels that America is still the greatest place in the world.

I am sure other races such as vietnamese or chinese have had their greatest sons and daughters who benefitted and achieved such greatness in America, but this man and other well-educated Cambodian born sons or daughters proved that they are just capable and intelligent when given equal opportunity to succeed.

vannak set a good example that any one khmer person, when given the opportunity with good home, good school, good society like that of america, can succeed in life. so, there are a lot of potential people in cambodia right now who will excel or achieve something great, whether personal or to society, to country, etc, when steer and guide and give opportunity like everyone else who are privileged in life, etc... yes, everyone of us can be successful in life, some through self-discipline, some through hard work, few through luck, even fewer through inheritance, and so forth. whatever you do, strife to excel in it; we all have this potential, find that route to succeed, ok!

once, you are successful, don't ever forget to help your country, your family, your people, etc to do the same. yes, there are more to cambodia than you and i, really!

Definitely, Navy Cmdr Vannak Khem is a role model of a Khmer refugee successfully resettled in the USA.

This is a good diplomatic gesture for the US to send him to train Khmer Navy personnel for 4 days. I hope this American gesture is not aimed at counter balancing China in the SE Asia area. Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge nightmare should never be used by a super power as political pawn again.
