It was essentially an exercise in "sabre-rattling", but the military's show of strength near the Cambodian border in Si Sa Ket province this week involved a complex set of military and political manoeuvring.
The intriguing part of this mission was to make Cambodia remove a stone tablet declaring ownership of the disputed border area around Preah Vihear temple.
For reasons that might have more substance than has been revealed, the Cambodians quickly acquiesced and smashed the tablet that had been erected on the orders of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
A high-level source said the show of force to pressure Cambodia to remove the tablet, erected in front of Kaew Sikha Khiri Sawara temple, received the green light from Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.
Cambodia built the temple in 1999 in the disputed area and ignored protests to dismantle it. Monks, who included ordained soldiers, stayed at the temple to reinforce Cambodia's claim to the 4.6-square-kilometre disputed area.
But after the stone tablet was erected declaring "Here! is Cambodia", Lt Gen Tawatchai Samutsakhon, the commander of the 2nd Army, met Cambodian senior military officers at Wat Kaew Sikha Khiri Sawara and asked them in no uncertain terms to remove it.
But while talks were going on, the military was devising a more ambitious and proactive plan to persuade the Cambodians.
First, a company of soldiers was moved to the border to conduct an exercise with heavy weaponry. This put them in a position to confront Cambodian soldiers who were being deployed in greater numbers across the border.
The second step was to mobilise four companies of soldiers who would take action if Cambodia refused to remove the tablet.
Then, army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha ordered the relocation of three new multiple rocket launchers to the border area in Si Sa Ket as part of the military exercise. They would be used to fire warning shots if necessary.
"The plan was to aim the weapons at a local mountain if Cambodia did not remove the tablet," the source said.
As Cambodia became more aware of Thailand's plans, it kept civilians at military bases to act as a human shield, according to the source.
The fourth step was for the air force to send fighter jets to the area and create sonic booms close to the border.
But there was no need to go to the third step as Cambodia decided to demolish the tablet.
"It is believed [Cambodian authorities] may be upset and frustrated and will find ways to avenge this," the source said.
"They may complain and accuse Thailand of treating them badly. But the show of force was to show ownership of the land and protect the dignity and reputation of our soldiers who have been blamed for being weak or too lenient towards Cambodia.
"I admire Prime Minister Abhisit for giving the military the freedom to devise the show of force."
He said a fifth step to ban Thais from crossing to gamble at 10 Cambodian casinos in Poipet was a part of the plan.

Hanoi changed leaders to entice China friendship and reconciliation while it exerted more control over Nom Benh moi to hurry with border limitation by 2012 or sooner.

Stop blaming our leaders, they are the masters of the art of war you can trust

Warfare is the greatest affair of state, the basis of life and death, the way to survival or extinction. It must be thoroughly pondered and analyzed. Therefore, structure it and evaluate it comparatively through estimations and seek out it's true nature.
As you now know that our leaders' task is to unite the people and make them follow the ruler, then they will die with him, they will live with him and not fear of danger, and as we all clearly see, our leaders in general have encompassed the wisdom, credibility, courage, strictness, and they do understand the laws for military organization and military discipline very well.
As you have heard "The wars win or lose before we ever fought" or another word "evaluating the enemy, subjugating the enemy's army without fighting is the true pinnacle of excellence". If you understand that then you will never blame our leaders for what strategy they have been using vis-a-vis Thailand's military bully. The basic strategy in warfare is to focus upon manipulating the enemy, creating the opportunity for an easy victory, and then applying maximum power at the appropriate moment. Avoiding strong forces is not cowardice, but wisdom, for it is self-defeating to fight when and where there is no advantages, like Sun Tzu's "The Art of War". All of you should have one of these books. He said "One who knows when he can fight, and when he can not fight, will be victorious. One who knows themselves and knows the enemy will not be endangered in a hundred engagements".
As we clearly see, initial estimations show that our gov't does not have or gain more advantage to the nation for going to war right now. Am I right?
The greatest military commanders have always frequently thought and identified solely with the common strategy of "Deceit and Deception". That's the strategy that they will be using in any warfare. Warfare must be viewed as a matter of deception, of constantly creating false appearances, spreading disinformation, and employing trickery and deceit. When imaginatively created and effectively implemented, the enemy will neither know where to attack nor what formations to employ, and will accordingly be prone to making fatal errors. How Deception does it like this if the enemies have greater number of forces full of strength? We avoid them and wait until we create chaos or weakness within the enemy's rank first. If the enemies' unity caused them to be separated, attack where they are unprepared.
Go forth where they will not expect it. If we found ourselves or estimated we are in advantageous position, destroy them. These are ways the military strategists devised to obtain their victories. They can not be spoken of in advance. As all of you have seen, the USA lost war, not on the battlefields in Vietnam, but in the war room in Washington DC. In direct battles, US Army's power machine have sought to obtain victory in every combat, but the press and the people in Washington have opposed the war. They demonstrated and kept on putting pressures on the Gov't to withdraw the US troops from Vietnam.
Now you clearly see war, win or lose, is not about military power, it's about deception, using our brain. Am I right?

In the world there are many countries big and small, strong and weak which coexist side by side.
To prevent the big and strong ones to harass or encroach the small and weak ones, they have created the UN so that these countries can coexist in peace.
The current stupid Cambodian gov’t which is not willing to use the UN to solve the present conflict with the neighboring countries is beyond the majority of the Cambodian people’s comprehension.
The current situation in Tunisia and Egypt is about the corruption, high unemployment and lack of free presses, but not about the ceding land to the neighboring countries.
Cambodia has them all, but its submissive population is willing to live like a flock of sheep.
